Can anyone please tell me whether the Prince of Wales Public House in Perry Rise was ever known under a different name?

According to Steve Grindlay's excellent and very comprehensive presentation earlier this year (great resource here: http://fhhistory.blogspot.com/) the Prince Of Wales has been trading under this name since 1847, but has, at some stage, been rebuilt

I have always known as POW. Back in the 70's had a great landlord and great beer but he them moved to Rutland ( has since died ).
Have not be in for over 25 years , as far as I know beer c**p , does anyone know any different please.
Walked past this morning it was looking a bit tatty.

I've been going in for a number of years and the place is a proper traditional boozer. Beer alright, nice outside heated garden now.

And great if you need to find a plumber / electrician / workman at short notice!

The lane beside the Prince of Wales is called Shaw's Lane. Originally there were 8 cottages along this lane, built by Thomas Shaw. He lived at no.1, which was on the site of the present pub. Shaw applied for a licence to sell liquor in 1847 and in 1851 he was described as a "beer seller".

The earliest reference I can find to the name "Prince of Wales" is in the 1861 census. Extensions and modifications were made to the cottage until, in about 1926, it was demolished and replaced by the present building. It may also have been at this time that the other cottages were replaced by the present terrace.

PVP sorry to be pedantic but what real ales do they have.

I really hope not - we do a lot of booze shopping there (was just planning the Christmas drinks shop, as it goes!) and I've never bought a bad bottle of wine there yet.

It's a great shop - a proper wine merchants with knowlegeable owners - and an asset to the area.

Now have confirmation - they are closing at the end of December.

An update on this. Off licence is still open but revised closing is end of January.

More intriguingly, seeing as the same family runs the wine bar next door, there is an application to turn it into a bar:

That is v interesting as they have the wine bar next door. Maybe they are looking to close the other one. Either way if they are still in business that is great. Be nice to have another new bar to go too - esp as Jam Circus is closed.

As the applicant is 'Mr Lawrence', presumably they're looking to extend their existing bar into where the shop currently is?

They would need planning permission for that so looks like this is a separate thing. If they were knocking through they would do it at the same time. Unless they have a plan to do that in the future.

Jam Circus is only shut due to fire damage. It is to re-open but not sure when.

I was in Mr Lawrence off-licence last week. They are keeping the wine bar and closing the off-licence, but also hope to start an on-line business.

Sorry to see them go.

Has anyone eaten a weekday lunch in the Honor Oak pub recently? I was wondering if it was worth a visit. There is no information on their Facebook page about their menu or even if they do food at lunchtimes.

So lucky to be getting a Sainsbury`s local. We still pine for the one lost to us when Shell and Sainsbury`s fell out a few years back.
