Wouldn't it be nice if we had a Tourist Information Centre there with samples of all local delights. Maybe I'm hoping for too much, but I think it could work.
Has anyone tried Napoli Pizza yet? It's the place that was briefly a polish restaurant.
Pizza around Forest Hill is pretty dire in my opinion so I'm looking for a place that does thin crust (preferably crispy italian style) and delivers. I can't stand places that use prepackaged dough bases (most places).
If you're getting delivery, Pizza Fresco in Crystal Palace is very good. All freshly made.
But I agree it would be nice to have somewhere good on our doorstep. Here's hoping.
Digime head down to HOP, Sodo right be the station have unofficially opened and will do the sort of pizza you want. Also Querce on Brockley Rise do nice thin pizzas, though not sure if they do them every day.

Sodo does look excellent and I'll be trying them out soon but they don't deliver and I wanted a quick pizza fix in the comfort of my sofa.
I did brave Napoli Pizza in the end and the food was actually very enjoyable. I'll qualify that praise slightly by saying that it wasn't a gourmet experience but for a standard take-away-type pizza it was very good. Much better than the other places I have tried in this area.
why have the new owners of Sodo a) not changed the exterior signage, and b) not bothered to repaint the front door.
They seem to have spent an eternity decorating the interior....
Odd.
I get the impression that they are doing the renovations themselves whilst running the business. I say well done to them in achieving what they have in a short space of time, I'm sure they'll sort the outside soon.
I got copied on an email from Punch Taverns about the Honor Oak Pub:
I would like to put your mind at rest that we have no plans to demolish the site! We have recently had a £400k refurbishment of the pub signed off by our board and will be proceeding with this over the coming couple of months. This will open the pub trading area up better incorporating the rear function room as well as building a new gallery kitchen on the ground floor. We will also be relocating the toilets to the first floor.
We appreciate that the pub has been closed for a long time and genuinely want to reopen it as soon as we can. However, given the scale of our investment there, this does cause some inevitable delay.
After being closed for such a long time, there is hope now that the pub/gastro bar will reopen in August. I hope this is true!
It looks so sad to see it boarded up as it was always a popular venue in the area.

I see that the owners of the pub site are Punch Taverns.
Although the response from Punch Taverns referred to in the above post sounds promising, I wouldn't get too excited just yet. Punch are (allegedly) in severe financial straits right now, and have been closing down many of their pubs in and around South London for some time now: for example the Portmanor in South Norwood was recently closed down and the property sold off - most likely to become a Sainsburys/Tesco mini-store.
Now this might be an ongoing strategy to retrench and concentrate on key sites where they believe that can run a profitable business, and the Honor Oak is one such site, but I think we need to be a bit wary of grand promises of jam tomorrow, given the track record of the company promising...
Hi, I'm a first time poster and live on St Germans Road a couple of houses along from the Honor Oak Pub. I emailed the brewery out of interest as to what their plans were for the pub and this is the response I received:
"After speaking with the Partnership Development Manager for the Honor Oak, I can confirm that we are hoping to open the site beginning of August 2014. We understand how frustrating this must be for you and we apologise for the delay, however we are doing what we can to get the public house re-opened. We do have a new partner going into the outlet and an investment will be taking place, this is currently being finalised with our legal department."
This email from Punch Taverns was sent last Friday - I have asked them to update this forum more regularly with their plans but they said they would only be able to do this if a specific request is made for information. Let's hope their plan to open the pub at the beginning of August 2014 remains on course.
I hope so and I hope it will have been worth the wait. We have really begun to feel the lack of a good local pub.
I look forward to the re-opening of this lovely pub.
Have the new owners any plans I wonder to re-introduce music nights.
There is a downstairs function room where this could easily be re-introduced.
I saw some activity at the pub as I left for work this morning. It looked as though the metal fencing was being removed so lets hope some building work will start there soon.

Looks true, as well! The anti-squatter screens are down, construction site fencing has gone up, white vans a-plenty and lots of fun-looking noisy ripping of things apart! There's even a sign with the site foreman's mobile number that you have to call if you need access to the site. So they must be serious!
Having said that, the Honor Oak's delay has given the Railway Telegraph the chance to really make its mark under its new manager. We're soon going to be spoiled for choice along the South Circ!
