I didn't realise you could get Clonakilty black pudding from Budgens - you have made me a VERY happy woman!

It's not fair to compare the black pudding in The Butchery to Clonakilty, as the latter is the best black pudding in the world.

Ah this where the sausage afficionados can get into heated discussion.

I do regard Clonakilty as the gold standard in the British Isles and it is certainly one of the best of its type. There are others, that are equally good or IMO better, though this statement does not go down well with the Irish OH.

The type from Flock & Herd I mentioned is from Wigan and is typical of the style from there. I grew up with this style and my Mother would serve it, boiled, for lunch with white bread, salt and mustard - a truly excellent lunch I still enjoy. It works well for this but the Clonakilty is better fried and this suits the Southern preference.

Then there is some excellent pudding from Scotland, morcilla from Spain and lets not forget Boudin. I sometimes dream about the Boudin Noir hot dogs available at Brussels Midi station.

Did I mention that I am into sausages?

Glad to have spread the joy for you AMFM. Budgens actually sell it in a larger packet than I see it in Ireland, so bizarrely it actually works out cheaper than importing it too. I have also heard a rumour that Jay speaks a smattering of Gaelic - have yet to put this to the test!

As a limerick girl we were brought up on galtee black and white pudding - tried the clonakilty not to my liking.................. Sorry

I remain very fond of Devonian Hogs pudding for which I have never discovered a source in London so it's become a very periodic treat.

millemop, Galtee? Really? Don't get me wrong, galtee is what we mostly had at home too and I'm rather partial but when we had Clonakilty it was somethng else.

Clonakiltys ,not for me either to posh ! Mine has to come from the butchers in cabra Dublin ! I check on a suitcase so I can take back as much as I like lol but then that's probably because I'm a Dublin girl !

Not a actual Fishmonger but a butcher who has also started selling fresh fish: Peter James on Ewhurst Road SE4. His range is small but the quality so far has been excellent. Has the occasional surprise item like Lump Fish, for instance. I understand some customers have been calling in just for fish which is giving him existential issues to contend with.

Otherwise, you are probably looking at Moxon's on Lordship Lane - pricey but good.

Yes, Moxon's are nearest and best i'd say, but a bit more of a trek is Soper's in Nunhead http://www.fcsoper.com/

I know Moxon's were looking at Forest Hill with a (very) speculative view to opening here some time ago, so it might interest them if a few more customers mentioned the fact that they are coming down the hill to shop there and would be more regular customers if they opened a branch in FH ! Probably not likely to happen, but you never know....i never thought we'd see a top class butcher open here, so anything is possible.
