Yes, barriers will be unmanned most of the time - I bet yer - and the gate will also be closed at this time. Causing great unhappiness in Forest Hill and Sydenham.

Gates must remain open if unpersonned.
Re Jumping over at Platform 2. I have seen youngsters doing this and evn they do not find it easy. Would not recommend it to a 70 year old

brian,
Gate jumping would be good practice for the London Olympics!

Also to clarify - i did mean i am going to jump the barrier and not the gate on platform 2....
I think we could have a barrier jumping day, see how many barriers you can jump in and around London in a day before the law catches up with you. I think I could manage at least 50!! Anyone care to challenge me??.... lol

I do feel sorry for the poor station worker that will have to patrol the barriers...

I dont - it's down to the staff at the station to tell the powers that be that the new system isnt working - if it doesnt.

I think that the 'poor' station staff work for an opressive, profit driven company with little regard for commuters needs. They know they work for such a company and should either say something to their bosses or deal with the concequences - i.e. commuters getting shirty with them.
Other examples of these type of workers are traffic wardens, hitting rediculous targets, police and so on - these people know what their signing upto and if they don't like the way their company behaves they should leave.

lol and you will be the first one i'm mean to!!
Incedently for those who are thinking of staging mini protests, anyone that works for southern etc has no power to detain or touch you, so if you want to carry on walking your fully entitled to - only transport police have the powers to touch you, if a member of staff for southern including inspectors touches you they can be charged with assault!...

I also voiced my view this morning at LB ' Meet the Managers' and spoke to the same Irish guy as David L did. Clearly he had had a lot of the same thing this morning from a number of people.
He did say the plat 2 gates would be open from 16.30 onwards and that they would get a buzzer system. If the station was not staffed then the gates on both platforms would be left open. Which begs the question why bother imposing such measures in the first place as clearly the periods in which revenue is protected by barriers is not really a huge amount of time?
What precisely is meant to happen at weekends? I use the platform 2 steps with the buggy as its fairly straightforward with help which I usually manage to get from passing members of the public. Its much too dangerous to get a buggy and increasingly heavy toddler up and down the longer and steeper steps from platform 1.
He did seem to take things on board however if things really do become a problem we simply need to start getting things taped on a video camera and forward to the press, and also on this website? Like most organisations they won't want the publicity. Trust me, some of tried it earlier this year with EDF and got a result pretty quickly.

CAW: the staff on the barriers are not the decision-makers who are responsible for this mess. Best save your ire for the fat controllers.

Who spend most of their lives behind a hundred layers of obfuscation, appearing once a quarter at one station at a busy time, and hardly ever replying to e-mailed complaints. Registering one's distaste for this corporate vandalism to anybody who works for that corporate body isn't that out of line. They should get to know that it causes problems on the ground and it can't just be dismissed as residents' committee busybodies.

The ticket barriers at Sydenham Station are already in operation and it's being reported on the Sydenham Town Forum that the ticket readers aren't reading Oyster season tickets and so the gates aren't opening.

I travelled into Sydenham rather than my usual Forest Hill on Monday, I had to get my Oyster Card checked at the gates, to be let in manually. The whole situation was a total and utter mess, really hope Forest Hill is a little smoother!

I am travelling into Sydenham now for the train to Croydon.
At F Hill first train one can get for cheap day is 0929. In the past no problem as the clerks issued tickets after 0918 had gone through.
I would think no chance now of catching that train
At Sydenham it becomes the 0931 so OK and the nice lady said she could sell me a ticket but gate would not let me through until 0930 but Moses on the gate let people through to avoid crush.

brian,
You can buy a cheap ticket the day before. The clerk asks you when you are going to use it? You say after 9.30 a.m..
