Apologies if this has already been posted, but I had a search and couldn't find anything.

I'm curious as to whether any forum users can recall an old private sports club that used to exist in Forest Hill, possibly simply called 'The Forest Hill Club'.

I used to visit there as a child in the 1980s with a friend and her father. It was a reasonably large place, with a fairly large outdoor swimming pool, tennis courts, a clubhouse with a bar and I think there were indoor badminton courts too. It was definitely still active in 1986, as I specifically recall this year. It therefore closed sometime between the late 80s and early 90s/00s. I don't have any recollection as to where in Forest Hill it was, as I lived some way away in Beckenham and wasn't familiar with the area.

It has subsequently closed and I think it's now flats, though that could be wrong.

I can't find anything at all on the net, though I found this image from the 1930s that looks like it was of the swimming pool I remember - which had a distinctive water fountain (pictured). http://www.gettyimages.co.uk/detail/3135...on-Archive

I know that there was a pool and tennis courts as part of Taymount Grange, but I don't recall that building, which would have been right beside that pool, so it's likely (but not certain) to be a different one.

If anyone can recall anything about it, I'd be very grateful for any input.

Many thanks.

I think you may be referring to the former sports club on Queemswood road, which is now a housing development. Your desription resembles my memories off it as it was. I also remember squash courts and snooker tables upstairs in the club house.

could also be the private club of Perry Rise that backed onto the
Prince of Wales? that had a Club House and swimming pool
I think it was more of a private drinking club than "sporty"

when the licensing laws restricted pub opening hours these sort of places were rather popular.

I believe it's the same place.
