My enquiries suggested that the tree cutting and works at HOP station was to provide an alternative access to platform 1 for use whilst the booking office was closed for reflooring. In the event they found they were able to maintain access through the booking office whilst the reflooring was done. So I guess that at some point someone realised that the alternative access was not going to be required and the project was abandoned - after a suitable waste of money and destruction of trees.

Honor Oak Park station: Southern have just invested and installed new entry and exit turnstils whilst also doing up the booking hall area a bit but the rest of the station including the stairs to both platforms are a disgrace, when are southern going to upgrade the station so it becomes a pleasant environment to travel through? Currently it looks like a run down hovell.

The stations down the East Lonon Line extension become the responsibility of TfL later this year (October from memory). They are planning on spending considerable money on enhancing the stations. I think Southern were under an obligation to install the ticket barriers in advance of handover to TfL and had to reinforce the floor to do this. So the makeover of the booking hall is a lucky side effect.
Does anyone know why the shelter on platform 2 is unavailable for use - or at least was a couple of days ago?

The station barriers are alive. Isn't that a treat for us all??

Were they? They were definitely not working this morning (7am), or eve (7.30pm).

They were working at 6:45pm along with a load of ticket inspectors, there to nab passengers, who either didn't have tickets or had the wrong tickets!
Its quite interesting that HOP has very few barrier gates and the barriers were all turned to exit at peak hour. This meant that anyone trying to enter the station had to use the disabled /pram gate which had to be manually opened. It suggests a bit of a cock up on the design front.

Interesting to hear that the barriers can't cope with the existing numbers of passengers. Substantial increases are expected when HOP gets an additional 8 East London Line Overground trains - probably from May next year.

TfL take over responsibility for the ELL extension stations later this year.
According to Julie Dixon, Rail Marketing and Communications Manager for TfL at a meeting with Syd Soc and others last night:
HOP is scheduled for refurbishment and renewal works commencing December 09.
The improvements are to what TfL refers to as 'Phase 3' standard which should include:
New floors and platform surfaces
Installation of entrance canopies (whatever that means) and new signage
CCTV to cover at least 90% of publicly accessible space
new PA systems
Improved inforrmation systems
Passenger help points
Improved lighting
I asked what would be done about the stairs - an answer might come later. I also asked whether the ELL 4 car trains would have to stop at the far end of platform 1. We should get an answer on that at some stage.
Similar improvements are scheduled to start at Forest Hill at the same time and at Sydenham in Feb 2010.

Does any one know if this means that we can use a prepaid oyster card to travel from HOP to London Bridge? I'm an infrequent traveller and would find it much easier to use the oyster card than having to queue for a ticket for each journey.

Sadly the news on PAYG Oyster is not so great. It seems that TfL have had issues negotiating agreements with the Train Operating Companies (TOC's). PAYG will have to be in place by the time the ELL starts running in ?May 2010, June latest. The best estimate is that it will be introduced at the same time as new fares in January 2010.

Thanks for the update. So there is little benefit to passengers from installing the barriers (as far as I can see) and only the prospect of increased congestion in the ticket office. Great!

I was at the same meeting as andrewr and although we still need confirmation, I do expect that TfL will operate the gates including PAYG tickets from September this year.
Other train operators will take longer to allow for using PAYG.
We could find ourselves in the position that you can travel to London Bridge by PAYG Oyster only if you change at Canada Water to the Jubilee Line.
There are bound to be a few perculiarities in the early days, but in my opinion it is well worth it for the increase in train services and being part of the 'tube'. We will have some PAYG service before other Network Rail stations.

Redalways, I suspect this may be the same flock of ticket inspectors hovering about at Waterloo East every single morning? (I usually get through there between 7.30am and 8am, so don't know when they finish, but they're gone by 6pm). At least 6 inspectors (and no, it's not enough if you show your ticket to just one of them, you have to parade the line), plus a few odd characters who are also clearly part of the group, plus a couple of backup police or community support officers for the heavy handed stuff. Holding up the flow of passengers through to Waterloo Main Station. Every morning. Not. Obvious. At. All.

I have seen the thug looking bouncer types who accompany these inspectors. It's funny that they are never there when you have been waiting at London Bridge station waiting for a cancelled train.

Why are there never any bikes parked at that lovely undercover cycle park outside HOP station? Is it because thefts are so likely its not even worth trying?
The cycle to the station would definitely save me vital minutes in the morning, and I don't need to think about taking the bike on the train as my office is very near the station at the other end, but I've been put off with the amount of space available!

All this money being spent on so-called improvements and absolutely no mention about disabled access. I don't think they could give a monkey's about anyone in a wheelchair or who has mobility problems.

DfT have said that they will be providing funding for disabled access to Honor Oak Park staion between 2012-2015.
Unfortunately it is a big job to make the entire rail system accessible, but Forest Hill station should be accessible next year and Honor Oak Park a few years later. Honor Oak Park will need some fairly major work to make it accessible.

Well, promises. promises from tfl.
We've only been living here since 1993, so somewhere around a 20 year wait isn't too long.

Just a thought. West Ham station is closed today as it is operated by LU. What is going to happen in the future when there is a tube strike? Will the station still operate?
