Lock your bike so that the front wheel is locked to the frame (remove the wheel if necessary) and either remove the saddle, lock it up too or swap the quick release bolt for one that requires a spanner.

I usually remove the pump, any lights etc... too.

Not sure what secure storage entails. I ride a motorbike too and we get nothing. Usually there's not even anything to lock it too, but any ground anchor will often be occupied with a chain someone else can't be bothered to carry home with them every day and any sheffield stands will be occupied by bicycles locked to them.

So it's often a case of whacking a disc lock on and hoping for the best. Every time I come back to my motorbike in London I'm expecting to see an empty space.
