I have been reading about the Pools and just wondered is there going to be parking facilities. I have read that there will be disabled parking and a drop off area. I would be interested to hear if there will be parking for others as there doesn't appear to be any over 30 mins around Dartmouth Road. Also I'm interested to hear opinions regarding the shops down that end of Forest Hill perhaps becoming occupied as I was there the other day and there are lots of empty shops. My view is once the pool is open more footfall perhaps will help promising businesses.
Megan,
There will be a single disabled parking bay. There is some non-controlled parking on Thorpewood Avenue , Derby Hill, and Clyde Vale, but most users will be better off travelling by foot, bicycle, or by public transport wherever possible.
There was never any extra parking provided when the pool was open until 2006 and the local streets were just about able to cope with parking by users of the pool (other than the odd person parking across residents' driveways). Car users who cannot find a parking space will be better off driving a bit further to The Bridge in Lower Sydenham or Crystal Palace, which have plenty of parking but are further from a town centre or major residential area.
I share your optimism that once the pool is open, there will be more opportunity for businesses at this end of Dartmouth Road.

Michael is right, no new car parking beyond what is already available in the area. No space on the site and little justification given the good public transport accessiblity and number of people living within walking distance. I am sure there is much discussion of this issue earlier on this thread......
Thank you Michael. I agree it would put a lot of pressure on the residential roads and the transport links are so frequent there would no point driving.
I know that L&Q have implemented a permit parking arrangement on the Dartmouth Estate next to the pools - so there wont be any parking allowed there now (I imagine alot of people parked there before takeover to L&Q)
I also very much hope the shops get regenerated - theyre a dire mess at the moment of dodgy 'barbers' and closed down low end stores
Thanks Satchers. It is really exciting to hear about all the work taking place after so much talking.
Poolsneighbour, parking was never allowed on the Dartmouth Estate, it has been residents only for as long as I can remember (over 30 years), controlled by posts that come out of the ground or chains with locks.
The large shop on the corner of Dartmouth Road and Clyde Vale is getting a really nice refit. Dont think they have news tenants signed up yet but it looks really nice inside now. Fingers crossed for something lovely (and no, before you say it, I dont have anything crossed, wishing for a Pizza Express etc.)
I think the arrival of the new pools will undoubtedly liven up that end of the road and I personally cannot wait.
On another note, I live very close to the building works and I must say, the amount of noise disturbance etc has been very reasonable indeed. Its not been at all intrusive. In fact Ive turned into a bit of a curtain twitcher and love looking at the progress each evening when I come home. Getting excited!!
Not for as long as I lived here...under control of Lewisham Homes and L&Q - there was no permit or bollard system or chains before. Are you thinking of somewhere else?
You are quite right. The bollards must have been removed at some point in the last 20 years without me realising. Although there is a sign saying 'residents only' http://goo.gl/maps/CU19, so I'm sure no swimmers or shoppers parked there.
Willmott Dixon newsletter, sent to local residents this week
How close do you have to live to be local? We are less than 100 metres away but have never had any information (hence my post). The PDF is exactly what I was thinking there should be, so I am happy - now just need to work out how to be considered 'local'!
Good to hear that the FHS is covering this in its newsletter, but you shouldn't have to join to be able to see it (although I guess you want to promote membership at every opportunity). The Society newsletters can be seen online at http://issuu.com/foresthill
I can from experience agree to a 'suck it and see' approach to the building plans. Lay aside the architectural ideas a while and how much of the old will survive. Pay as you go for the foundation solution first.
An old Victorian building in which I live now way south of se23 has had this exper. Drain CCTV tests and relining them together with some masonry-boulder inerts where clay is causing structural defects;-is this true of the building overall I wonder? Well whatever the concreting amounts to it is seen to be the video story similar standing. Its not cheap to have an environmental dept officer insitu.
I heard from a friend who is a long term committee member of a number of swimming associations that there is a "topping out" ceremony at the pools this afternoon. Does anyone know anything about this?
I saw 2 workmen guarding a road water point and lot of water had been drawn near the pool a couple of days ago. As I understand pools need water to keep it stable as they are designed for the weight of water to keep it in place. So the topping up must mean the last drops of water will be in. Can't wait to dip my toes in it.
For the doubters - both pools are currently full of water for leak testing purposes. The project is said to be on schedule for completion in the Spring. The project was 'topped out' by the ceremonial pouring of some wine, oil, corn and salt into a suitably prepared recess in the concrete of the first floor!
