I've been using the library for a few months. While it is great to now have a refurbished and smart-looking library nearby I would have to agree with other posters that the emphasis on providing entertainment and computers is too strong. I grew up spending lots of time in my local libraries so I certainly think they should be accessible and available to kids. But surely it should be to encourage kids to read! If they are spending their time playing games or surfing the internet surely it's waste of library space which could be otherwise allocated to more books?
One other big problem with the library is the utter absence of any ramp at the front entrance. As a new dad who is now pushing a buggy around I find this very annoying, especially as the new steps seem to have been designed in such as a way as to make it physically impossible to even pull and bump a buggy up the steps. Really, was installing a ramp never even considered when the re-building work was commissioned? (And yes I know there's a door round the back, but you can end up waiting several minutes before someone comes and lets you in!)
Just to be fair, I don't wish to sound completely negative about the library. I'm enjoying finding my way round the new stock of books and I've found the staff to be friendly and helpful. It's just a pity that the experience of using the library environment wasn't thought-through more.
