Does anyone know when these improvement works will be done? Will it be when the new longer trains come in, which is, I believe, quite soon?
Living as near to Sydenham as I do to Forest Hill, I've been using Penge East and Lower Sydenham as alternatives.

December 2014 is the oft quoted date for the ELL at least. Apparently, London Overground was aiming for 2016 but then the mayor put 2014 as a manifesto commitment and this came as something of a surprise to them. So, it may be that we see something then.
Sadly that will not be the end of improvement works. Especially with Thameslink in progress till 2018.

Probably no let up until the final Southern platforms are done at London Bridge. Which I think is sometime in 2015/16??
I think it's been doubly busy because they are also trying to put in new footbridges at new cross gate. But they might be doing that at night... So I'm not sure.
