Quote:
MANIFESTO

In Lewisham, Labour is working hard and planning for the future. We do this against a backdrop of a difficult economic climate, made very much worse by the Conservative-Lib Dem Coalition government that chooses austerity over growth and hits ordinary people hard whilst helping out their wealthy friends with tax cuts.

Over the next four years the Council will face further savage cuts in the funding government provides to support our services. We will inevitably face some very tough choices and we will need to take a radical approach to how services are delivered. But we also need to do even more to address the challenges we face. If I am re-elected I will:-

  1. Deliver a minimum of 2,000 new affordable homes, including at least 500 council homes, tackle rogue landlords and rip-off letting agents
  2. Provide a primary school place for every child and improve secondary school results by 10%
  3. Tackle the cost of living crisis, lead the way on fair pay, fight fuel poverty and freeze council tax for at least 2 years and keep at inflation or below thereafter
  4. Ensure that the benefits of regeneration in Lewisham reach local people, and support the creation of 3,000 new jobs over the next seven years
  5. Help young people though the provision of high quality vocational training and increase the number of apprenticeships to 1,000

Hopefully this will generate some serious comment here, although I'm off getting involved in any controversy until after Easter Smile

After TWELVE YEARS as mayor, if he hasn't managed to do all this stuff, what suggests he will do it now?

Why only post Steve Bullock's manifesto. There are other candidates in the election too.

For a bit of balance

http://www.nundy4mayor.com/

http://www.duwaynebrooks.com/

http://peoplebeforeprofit.org.uk/what-we.../manifesto

http://lewisham.greenparty.org.uk/news/2...candidate/

and there may be others that haven't announced yet.

For unknown reasons, not all their web sites make it clear exactly which party they represent.

Duwayne Brooks represents the liberal democrats.
Simon Nundy represents the conservatives.

And the people before profit candidate is John Hamilton

Apologies for any apparent bias in just posting Steve Bullock's manifesto.

I'm told of two other possible Mayoral candidates, Chris Flood, Lewisham Socialist Party (@shamsocialists) and Paul Oakley - UKIP, I'd guess, if it's the same as stood in the last GLA election

I'm going to save you my reasons for voting for Steve Bullock in 2014 - set out on Sydenham Town Forum here - but I regret not having space to go into the standards of housing maintenance - not least because I don't know that much about it, living in tradtional owner occupied housing. But comments such as yours, and some made at at meeting organised by Dianne Abbott recently, carry a background message that, for all that expanding social housing ought to be a good thing, the practice leaves something to be desired. In other words, what Mrs Thatcher was responding to with her right to buy policy.

If he is so worried about government cuts perhaps he should think about giving up his car and chauffeur and save the people of Lewisham a few pounds on their council tax. Another big saving could be made by cutting the planning dept in half and stop the council interfering in improvements people would like to make to their own homes especially after what has been allowed to happen at the bottom of Loampit Vale, looks awful.

I was depressed when I heard that Sir Steve was standing again. Looking at what else is on offer I am beginning to feel suicidal. I'd rather vote for my cat.

My cat's career mouse kill has just edged up to 18, and she's less than two years old. How does your cat's record compare?

But will your cat build houses, Tim?

I'm rather depressed by the candidates. I don't think I can vote for any of them.

I think we should have the 'two term' law where elected officials can only stay in power for two terms maximum. It might make them try harder too. I'm sure Steve is a good guy (I've been told so) but I have yet to be convinced that he's been particularly effective. He said himself that it's difficult doing things with such a bureaucratic council. If he's the leader of it, and he see's this as a problem, then why doesn't he try to change it?

And on the Sydenham Town Forum, what I actually think.

But I haven't discussed it with my cat.

Has Sir Steve shaved off his beard and hair for the election? It can make you look years younger.
