How do I type a tick?

Can anybody make a tick the sign for correction, as there is no key for it.

Depends what Word you have.
I have 2010. If you have:
On your toolbar select Insert, then Symbol, then in font 'wingdings'. The tick is at 252.

Not specifically for a 'tick' but it may well be there

Will only work on a keyboard with a Keypad, to use Alt codes hold down the Alt key and type the number

Alt 1 = ?

Alt 2 = ?

Alt 3 = ?

... and so on
