Over a year ago a small group of residents got together to plan a garden for local people on a bit of land next to Travis Perkins. After lots of hard work, by all involved the garden work in underway!

And we're having a party to celebrate

The Garden opens on Sunday 27th July, 2-5pm, with a special guest appearance by local CBeebies celebrity Sarah-Jane Honeywell.

There will be face-painting, balloon-art, stalls, games, food and drink, a tombola and guided planting sessions led by Groundwork.

It's all happening outside Travis Perkins' main entrance, next to Sannons Garden Centre on Stanstead Road, SE23 1BS

Sarah-Jane will unveil the plaque at 3.30pm

But, we can't open the garden without a name - we need your suggestions -any ideas welcome, but if you can show off a bit of local history, that would be especially good. Secret prize to be announced for the winner, and of course the legacy of naming this fantastic garden! Please post your entries here, closing date 11th July

Thats sounds really good. Can't think where the land is, but will be there (somehow).

Nice one.

That's because the garden hasn't been planted yet - we are still clearing the land. Planting should start the week after next and it should be transformed by the 27th. Very glad to see Hoppy's coming - everyone is very welcome!

How about something with Stag Beetle in the name (Lucanus Cervus if you want the latin!)? My 7 year old son looks forward to walking along Stanstead rd during late May/June as it seems to be a hotspot for them. As they're becoming rarer and FH has a reputation for them it might be nice to use them as a logo or emblem too - very dramatic! Just an idea - perhaps you want something a bit more horticultural and less nature reserve...

I know it would be regarded as too simple but what about 'Forest Hill Park', there doesn't seem to be anyhting called that already in the area. It tells you everything, its in Forest Hill, its a park. Thumbsup

It all depends on the planting, but since Sarah-Jane has her wings, how about The Faery Forest?

I suspect the spelling of 'Fairey' would be in dispute and why would it depend on the plants....? Much as I would love to be able to plant Fairies its not possible as far as I know. Don't forget in these days of 'PC' someone will imply that Fairies are some form of either witchcraft or devil worship. I've had my Foxgloves ripped out of my garden as a neighbour deems them evil and the devil's bidding.....what a load of old cack. But you go for it, in this country it is Majority rule..and I'm fine with that, as that's why I live here. Thumbup

I know it's also the name of a very sweet garden centre not too far away but I love The Secret Garden (and it seems quite secret - can't quite imagine where it is and I walk along to Shannons a fair bit). Otherwise maybe: Forest Garden, The Hidden Garden? Like the idea of seeing some fairies there as well as some stag beetles (did no one else like that idea?). Btw Greensleeves - you have a looney neighbour - don't recommend the window cleaners to them!

with my documented confusion about the location of this garden, I vote for the Secret Garden too. Either that or Blind Mans Corner.

Thanks for all the names, really great ideas. Love them all.

Also had a couple more; the Stanstead Strip and the Residents patch. Last entries will be accepted on Sunday at 6pm, so keep thinking if you want your idea enshrined into local history (!?).

For those of you still trying to locate the garden (and I have to say it's more of a patch than a park); it's right next to Shannon's garden centre - you will still have to use your imagination for the next couple of weeks, but am sure it will be worthy of Chelsea by the time the 27th comes along.

Not sure if I mentioned, but looking for volunteers for the day - variety of tasks to suit all so if you're interested, please email me at
