Just thought I would share this with everyone, as I know there are some people on here as equally nerdy as me.

With all the bad weather and high tides, I caught wind that the Thames Barrier would be shutting today, so popped along to watch and catch some time lapse of it closing.

What I didn't expect was, that while filming and taking pictures, the Thames would actually breach the bank and begin to fill the park.

So after some editing, blogging etc, here it is, in words, stills and time lapse video, the Thames breaching the bank by the Thames Barrier today.

I enjoyed the time lapse - especially when the water suddenly appeared over the bank!

Indeed, all happened rather suddenly, even in realtime. A minute or two after the last gate shut, it breached. Silently yet forcefully.

Added some music to the vid too so its a little less silent movie.

Excellent photos Snazy. I was right there a couple of days before so really interesting to see what can happen. Thanks for this post.

All the best

Ian

Thanks for the comments.

I feel I should correct myself though, as I have received a few 'complaints' about using the word 'breach'
The river comes over the banks on a fairly regular basis, and the flood defences are higher than the bank, therefore nothing was 'breached' Thumbdown Sorry about that lol

Glad people enjoyed the vid, music and annotations added to draw your eyes to what is going on.

Very interesting.
I wonder how many children are washed out to sea from that play ground every year?

lol hopefully none, but from watching how some parents were happy for their kids to be so close to the waters edge, its an accident waiting to happen im sure.

Quite chuffed with the attention it seems to have received from the media. Certainly didn't expect that at all. Thumbup
