Oh dear. That presumably means they intend to increase the maximum red time wait for local pedestrians in favour of the through traffic.
This is not a SE23 victory. At all.

Well, up to a point, Lord Copper. Elsewhere on this site is a link to a map showing air pollution readings along major roads. And the clear evidence in my view is that where there are traffic bottlenecks (Catford Bridge to Brownlee Road for example) air pollution readings are off the scale. So having vehicles queued up on the South Circ from SE23 Co-op all the way back to Calais isn't going to do pedestrians a lot of good, either, in my view.

I do agree there has to be a balance - of course I do: I'm also a local pedestrian! - and they obviously aren't going to set the green light to 6 minutes' duration or anything silly like that because then that would just stuff all the morning rush hour traffic into the London Road lights and we'll be no further ahead. But the past couple of weeks of 25 seconds red and 12 seconds green has just been ridiculous.

Frankly, I'm just impressed at getting a personal email from a named official with their own phone number - with a clear indication that action really is being taken!

Shame nothing is being done to deal with the traffic that builds up on Honor Oak Park and the pollution it spews out, just check the white flats at the end that have been converted from shops, we're breathing all that in. I've tried to make my point and I know Michael has brought it up at council meetings but nothing is being done.

Shocking seeing as though it's been highlighted as a pollution hotspot by the council themselves.

Reading this now, I wonder what the outcome is/was? I'll jump on the 'sorting traffic out' bandwagon and find out. Yippee Ki-Yay etc etc

Of course if the lights were stuck, then it is good that they are/will be fixed.
Holding traffic back for no reason serves no-one. So a qualified 'well done' to you.

But I 'definitely, Lord Copper' object to the extra bonus of lengthening the pedestrian waiting times. The current waiting time seems about right and fair. Lengthen the wait and people will start crossing regardless assuming they are faulty (and this set often is).

Good point. At least we have a name at TfL and via DM I can share a phone number with you if you think the timing is wrong.

That is fantastic Mr Numbers! There was clearly something wrong and thanks to you it's now resolved and you've benefitted loads of people in the process. Pedestrians are no worse off - they just have to push the button when they are there like the old days. Fantastic stuff! Well done. You can go on the fourth plinth now!

Agreed. Excellent work, Mr_Numbers.

Deano, you can still have the fourth plinth.

Shall we ask whoever owns Trafalgar Square if they might build a fifth plinth for Mr_Numbers?

What about a rotating plinth that they can share?

Could be so eye-catching that it would bring the traffic to a halt - which wasn't really the point of the exercise Laugh

Still, it's the West End and not SE23, so the traffic is usually ground to a halt anyway.

The lights by the Co-Op seem to have reverted to pedestrian control again, red light about every 15 seconds at rush hour, nightmare.

Meanwhile, back at the traffic lights...

I've just walked past the pedestrian crossing lights opposite the Co-op and there's an engineer at the top of a ladder doing something to the camera/traffic sensor above the lights.

I thought it was probably a potential health and safety violation for me to engage a man up a ladder in conversation so I'm not sure what he was doing exactly, but it looked promising!

Are you sure it was a ladder, not a plinth?

Definitely a ladder - and a foldy-up telescopic one, too - so that had major H&S written all over it. I'm just surprised they didn't close the A205 from Woolwich through to Chiswick just to make sure he didn't get wobbled by passing traffic.

Without taking any timings, I noticed some partially fossilised looking pedestrians waiting at the newly configured lights today. Only partially, as of course one eventually identified the lights as defective and made their own way across. They did change in the end.

Only my first reading, so I will not jump to conclusions. But I'll be placing a large slab of steel in the bottom of my shopping trolley in future, in case I need to trigger the lights from the PV exit...

The pedestrian crossing is being triggered without anyone pushing the button. I've reported it to TFL.

I noticed that last night. It allowed me to catch my bus. Swings and roundabouts.

This was either fixed extremely promptly or resolved itself. Good luck on the bus catching, Baboonery Rofl
