Anyone else notice the homemade signs that have begun appearing around FH Station? They urge riders to 'stop spitting' and compare spitters to both chavs and snakes. Spitting was also deemed to be 'disgusting.' Just curious if anyone else has spotted these.

Will look when I stumble through the station later this evening.

This morning the sign was among other signs on the outside of the ticket office. It was the 'snakes' version.

maybe it is a spitting red route, with "no spitting" between 7am and 7pm?

Southern Railways are planning to keep the gate closed to Perry Vale for most of the day when Oyster Readers are introduced. Only during peak times will staff man the exit with handheld Oyster readers. For more details read http://foresthillsociety.blogspot.com/20...ut-of.html

wow. this seems a system designed to maximise inconvenience for just about everyone concerned - train users who would otherwise use the PV gate will have to go over, then back under, just to get back where they started. Other train users will have to put up with many more people using the bridge - and the staff will have to put up with annoyed commuters! - is there anywhere we can write to about this?

That'll be great for disabled people and people with pushchairs, especially for those who live on the east of the tracks. I know a lift is planned at some point but that is by-the-by. At least at the moment you can alight on platform 2 and, with pushchairs at least, bump down one flight of steps (and then find a non-stepped route for which ever way you go). Bumping up and down two long flights of steps on the bridge will be a nightmare/impossible (I don't accept offers of help if I've got both my little'uns in the double pushchair as I don't want to do anyone an injury!).

Jim Dowd resolved this matter last time they attempted to close the gates- I suggest someone write to him about it.
It seems that with every positive technological advancement comes an administrative hitch.
I can't see how the situation differs from what it is now.

I would love to see them trying to staff this reliably at all, especially at 8.30pm in the evenings which as far as I am concerned should also qualify as ' peak time' judging by the hundreds that got off a packed train on Monday evening.

As someone with a pushchair, I try to avoid peak time journeys so this affects me as well. If the gate is no longer open then like a lot of people I will have no choice but to continue to Sydenham and catch the train back up. It is much too dangerous to attempt the bridge steps twice with a baby in a pushchair. At least the other way its fairly easy to bump or carry it up or down.

Except that they have the same problem Sad

ELL and Oyster should make life easier for us, not harder.

Is there any progress on access via the Perry Vale car park? Surely it would make sense to sort this out and install a suitable Oyster access point there, which would also spread people out on the train Smile

Jim Dowd and Len Duvall have both been made aware of the situation. Hopefully their intervention may improve the situation.

Now for a more constructive point - currently people can come and go as they please from down platform. Once Oyster is in effect, we would just need a post to scan in and out on (to avoid paying over the odds on prepay). As long as the most common destination stations have barriers, there is little chance of TfL losing out.

Good grief - it was bad enough this evening (about 6.30pm) when they had a couple of people checking tickets at the PV exit; crowds of people waiting to get through.

Agree with pvp that it would be more sensible for them to install an Oyster scan point by the exit so prepay users can touch in and out, like the ones at DLR stations and at NX Gate. Preumably FH train users can't be trusted to do this themselves, though Cursing

I know that the mayor of London is not responsible for Forest Hill station, but he is I think responsible for the Oyster Card scheme? What with elections coming up, maybe an email campaign to Ken Livingstone might be useful?

I will be giving it a go!

So the staff with the oyster reader will need to check each card manually?
That will take ages.

I know, why not print a date the journey is valid until, in big letter on a pocket sized card.
The inspectors could visually inspect these 'tickets' very quickly. Thumbup

I noticed some cordoned off spaces and some building materials in the Perry Vale car park, adjacent to the platform. Whilst not at all conclusive, it did look like something may be being done to allow access to the platform to the car park...
