I agree, everyone should complain speciofically on the point that when the gate is closed it is a health and safety hazard. I mean how many poeople are there at rush hour trying to push and shove up those stairs...and when the icy weather hits us... well nightmare.Cursing

Has anyone else noticed a strange smell at Forest Hill Station? Or is it just me?
It kind of smells like glue and soap. Do you think it may be comming from the building site on Perry Vale?

It is the stench of decay as the posh-side capitalist system rots from within.

I think that the smell is the salt which they use to melt the ice. I recall the same smell last winter at HOP.

Maybe it's a pub user that doesn't like children.

I posted the same thing in this forum last year. Every year it is the same. It is the grit on the stairs and the platforms. For some reason the Honor Oak Park second platform stairs smell much stronger than the rest of the station when they put the grit on and when you go up the stair you almost gag. I have occasion where I thought I was going to be sick last year. Last night was the first night I noticed it was back.

It's hit me the last couple of times I've used FH station

It smells like pure ammonia

How strange..salt and grit seemed to work just fine for many years. Why have they upgraded to hardcore chems? Horrible

I believe it's because Southern is using urea (which smells of ammonia/wee) on contact with moisture.

One reason it is used is because most platforms, bridges, etc are either steel or reinforced concrete, and using urea avoids corrosion accelerated by rock salt. I would rather the council would use it on the roads too.

Les.

thanks for the reply...it's good to have the mystery cleared up

maybe urea is corrosion friendly..is it environmentally friendly - anyone know?

but anyway it's pretty unpleasant for *people*..so is it really the best option?

I wonder what an environmentally aware and chilly country - like Sweden f'rinstance - does on their bridges/pedestrian walkways...that would be interesting to know

I did see one of the station attendants using a very swishy machine to distribute the 'substance'. I'd love to know how much it cost. What ever happened to a bag of salt grit and a shovel?

I understand it is 10 times more expensive than rock salt, but does not corrode metal bridges etc..

Well according to http://www.lwr.kth.se/Forskningsprojekt/...ex_eng.htm
Sweden uses 250,000Te of rock salt per year.

Enviromentally speaking I believe there is not much to choose between rock salt and urea - both kill plants and aquatic life in high concentrations.

See link for urea. Its actually a substance created in the body. Its also present in many creams for eczema, such as E45.

An excess of it causes gout.

Urea (also known as carbamide) is a waste product of many living organisms, and is the major organic component of human urine.

Lovely.
