Why do people say "I would like to apologise"? It's as if they would then say words to the effect "but I don't give a monkeys".

I think the statistics will show very few people use this exit in this sampling period.
This will be highlighted in the consultation document, and so the maintenance of permanently bricking this exit up can proceed.
Not forgetting some barbed wire on top.
cost ~?10.50 benefit: all worse off

Alternatively they can put some unmanned automatic barriers there, but due to safety concerns they would need to be fixed open in the evenings to stop dangerous overcrowding on the platform.
cost: ~?10,000 benefit: fairly pointless

Alternative 2 is to make a nice wide wheelchair/pram friendly exit at the car park end as Michael has been promoting.
cost ~?50,000 benefit: full inclusive access to platform. Promotes rear car park. The old staircase area can be reserved for urination and a centraal dumping area for their old fridges and bikes.

I'm a little late on this one, but the first day when the gates were closed I asked one of the men inside the station & he politely explained that the gates would be closed for two days to carry out passenger counts.

I then saw people doing counts on the platforms twice as I left the station. Once the guy had a counter in his coat pocket and was very unobtrusively doing the count, would have been easy to miss if I hadn't been looking for him.

I was glad they were doing a count, as maybe it will show somebody how many people are using the station, but of course I understand the safety concerns and annoyance. I also don't understand why they didn't just have another person at the bottom of the steps counting on the Perry Vale side.

A very succinct point.

And it still escapes comprehension why in these circumstance Southern put up a notice the alluded to maintenance work.

Worth noting that Platform 2 at HOP Station had a second gate which greatly eased congestion in the evening rush hour - but this was closed a couple of years ago and has never reopened.

I don't think any reason was given at the time. Passenger count or not, it's worth making sure the Perry Vale gate stays open at FH.

I've seen them doing such counting before, but I've never seen them close an entrance/exit for it. Just what on earth could they hope to achieve by doing this? The only possible explanation I can think of is that they were short of staff, and instead of postponing or simply counting one side one day and the other side the next day, they decided to inconvenience thousands of commuters instead.

Incidentally, you can find details of station usage at http://www.rail-reg.gov.uk/server/show/nav.1529

Here are stats for London (inner and outer) stations for total entries and exits 2005/06, with Forest Hill and Honor Oak Park highlighted in bold and red.

Heyyyyyyyy

I don't feel left out anymore - got my obligatory four paragraph short note from Southern in letter form today.

They chose to replay the "passenger count....forthcoming gating strategy." card.

"Samantha Hood" offered no explanation or make any reference to the notice that offered "maintenance work" as a reason.

Poor old Samantha, Southern don't rate her efforts highly enough as a Customer Services bod to provide her with a direct telephone number or e-mail address that we can write or respond with.

It looks as if they will be doing the same thing again this week - a new notice had appeared in the window of the station this morning, apologising for the inconvenience that 'this gate' (Confused) would be closed on the 5th and 6th. I didn't see any signs at the Perry Vale entrance, though.

Now they are blaming a junior member of staff for the miscommunication......read on...

Thank you for your email.

I have been in contact with the station manager and I will try to answer the points you have raise as best I can.

The gate was shut for passenger counts due to the gating strategy being in an advanced stage. The supervisor used his initiative to put out posters on the Monday advising customers of the closure. He did use the issue of maintenance work but he has been advised to run any future posters through a manager.

I have passed on the comments about lack of visibility of the staff doing the station surveys to the relevant manager.

Once again I would like to apologise for the inconvenience caused.

They all have. I can imagine it is not the most rewarding of jobs and they prob get a lot of agro but the occasional smile to people who are decent to them would not go amiss. I take it you refere to the gent with the grey hair?

Well, the gate was shut this morning. And how many people could I see doing the counting? Precisely zero.

The notice mentioned something about it being connected to the forthcoming automated ticket-barriers. I have a very bad feeling that this "counting" exercise will conclude total passenger numbers only warrant barriers on the south circular side of the station and suprise, suprise the gate will be permanently shut...

Does FH has ticket barriers? I am considering moving to FH and have a Zone 1-2 season ticket, will I need to get the Zone 3 upgrade?

Yes, because we don't appreciate theft or fraud in Forest Hill.

I mean, really.
