Nearest fishmongers to Forest Hill (depending which part of FH you are in) is Billings on Sydenham Road, near the junction with Fairlawn Park.

Moxon's is on Lordship Lane. From Google:

Tuesday 9:00 am – 8:00 pm
Wednesday 9:00 am – 8:00 pm
Thursday 9:00 am – 8:00 pm

Don't forget Forest Hill's own fishmonger who comes up from Hastings every Thursday. Grant Stanley (07971 145164) parks next to William Hill every Thursday from 6:30am - 10am. He sometimes leaves early if trade is poor or he has sold out, so get there before 9:30 to be sure.

If you want something in particular, give him a call a couple of days before and he'll try to get it. He also comes to the Food Fair, but has had to miss the last few due to lack of fish or family issues - his daughter had a complicated pregnancy.

You mean with Newlands Park. Fairlawn Park is down the bottom in 'Upper Beckenham' near Sydenham Community Library and Home Park. ;-)

I do, and that's what I meant to say. Thanks, Syd Central. Brain not fully engaged today. Of course Billings is at the junction with Newlands Park, which makes it even nearer to FH.

If you are prepared to travel a little further afield and out of SE23 then Sopers in Nunhead Lane (maybe Evelina road at that point?) is excellent. To make the journey worthwhile Ayres bakers are also good.

I use Sopers and Billings depending on what time I have on Mondays, and find both fantastic!

Hi I havent seen any up to date curry recommendations for a while and was thinking of curry this weekend. Where would people recommend - I often see recommendations for Dewanian or Elachi - are these still good. Not sure if there is anywhere new. Whilst I like Barbur, I am looking for more traditional curry. Any recent experiences very gratefully received.

Thank you all.

Ganapati in Peckham Rye is really good - Keralian style. They do not deliver but, providing they are not too busy, will do takeaway to collect if you ask nicely. Other than Babur, know of none more local that touch these two.

Elachi better than Dewaniam these days, and better than most. Haven't tried Ganapati yet...

We always eat Indian at the Elachi. Standard has remained consistent for years.

A couple of weeks ago the Elachi was closed for electrical repairs (now open again) so we returned to the Dewanian for the first time in several years. Food was traditional and nice enough, but we prefer the style of the Elachi.

I'm a big fan of Cinnamon, they had a great chef a couple of years ago who left but has now come back and I think the food is outstanding there and very good value.

I second Cinnamon-but the one in Brockley, not Forest Hill (big difference!)

Truly tasty. The Lamb Dhansak is real special, the Lentils are fantastic (always a good sign) and even the onion salad is the best I've ever had.

I never go anywhere else. Although tempted now by The Elachi!

India Gate on London Road - Forest Hill for me.

Huge menu (they do everything), well cooked and competitively priced. I like the fact that the dishes are low on oil and grease making a slightly healthier option to your average curry house. The staff are very friendly and you can see your food being cooked on the TV screens in the restaurant which is a nice touch.

Sounds good, I think I'll be paying them a visit. Who knows, hopefully it'll lead to a lot of visits.

Thank you all for suggestions, Elachi is the nearest (its just to cold to venture to Peckham...)

The next Forest Hill Food Fair is Sunday 7th April.
There is a big banner above the subway, but the date has fallen off (oops), so please don't think it is this weekend.

As well as some of the regular stalls, there are a couple of new stalls that are coming for the first time. So if you like smoked fish, Spanish food, bread (or our regulars; van-made pizza, man-made foods, vegetables, burgers, cheese, cakes, etc), then you should pop down to Forest Hill station on Sunday 7th April.

If you were expecting a fair this weekend, then don't be too disappointed. Horniman museum have their Easter fair on Saturday and Sunday this weekend. http://www.horniman.ac.uk/visit/events/e...aster-fair

Hello,

After many happy years in Forest Hill, I am looking to sell my flat near Horniman Gardens. Which estate agent would people recommend?

Am I better off using a Forest Hill agent or an East Dulwich one?

Many thanks in advance for your thoughts.

I went to the brockley jack for lunch today and they have a "new" menu. So disappointed as I thought the previous food was really reasonably priced and tasted like it was cooked by a real person who understood about cooking. The new menu has about ten times the amount of choice but it tastes bought in and the ingredients are of an obviously lower quality! Maybe they couldn't make enough profit previously but they have certainly lost my custom and I won't be eating there again!

I think its a real shame as having good food went with the pub being a more special theatre pub rather than being a bog standard chain pub.

shimmysister If I were you I would tell the owners how you feel. We need to tell independent businesses what we want so all local businesses can deliver on quality and price, hope I'm not wrong!
