Banning canines, or fining said canine's owners for allowing their dogs to foul WITHOUT cleaning it up.

I was shocked but grateful to be thanked the other day for cleaning up after my dog. Hearing the thank you I thought they were being sarcastic until it was mentioned that not many people bother cleaning up, so thank you.....

Disgusting that people cant do the simplest of things.

Press release

LONDON BOROUGH OF LEWISHAM

25 November 2008

Vote for Lewisham?s parks and help them win a park make-over.

The Mayor of Lewisham, Sir Steve Bullock, is calling on all residents to vote for one of two local parks in the borough, to win a slice of investment funding.

The Mayor of London has just announced online voting is set to take place between now and January 2009 on 47 parks around the capital. Local Authorities were asked to submit parks in their borough ? more than a hundred of the capital?s parks were put forward by all 33 London boroughs. These were then whittled down at the GLA to the final 47.

The final 10 winning parks to receive a slice of investment funding will be decided by a public vote via the GLA website. Investment funding of up to ?400,000 each for the winning parks could be won.

Mayor of Lewisham, Sir Steve Bullock, said: ?We may be in the middle of a city, but Lewisham has the most fantastic parks and open spaces. Two of our parks need your votes to help them win money for a make-over. I urge everyone in the borough ? young or old ? to vote for their favourite. MAKE YOUR VOTE COUNT and help give a Lewisham park a face-lift!?

The two parks in Lewisham that residents are being asked to vote for are:

Mayow Park in Forest Hill
Deptford Park

Londoners can vote to choose which parks get the ?400,000 simply by logging on to http://www.london.gov.uk/parksvote , by text message or by postal vote. Voting closes on Friday 30 January 2009.

In addition to the regular contract work carried out on Lewisham?s parks, the Council has invested a further ?1.3 million in parks over the past 12 months, secured from both internal and external funding, to undertake the regeneration of Broadway Fields, the Quercus project in Ladywell Fields, improvements to play facilities and Green Flag improvements. Any money secured from this scheme would compliment the long term award winning investment that that the Council has already made across Lewisham.

What happened to the Home Park nomination? I presume that the Mountsfield Park application is dealt with differently, as it is for the larger pot.

I urge everyone to get voting - for both the Lewisham parks if possible - remember the vote for the best place in Lewisham, where FH beat Blackheath and the Catford Cat to the top spot.

just voted

not sure the "pitch" for Mayow Park is the most engaging, but it does deserve a little attention. I've just come back from a town in Spain where every other corner had a play area for kids that was many times better than what we have to offer. I so wish we used our parks more.

I always go running to Mayow Park in the summer and most times there are teenagers playing football in the bowling green, so I'm not surprised at all.
I've never seen anyone playing bowling though! Where are the bowling players? Why don't they complain to the Council or the Police?

Gep most of the bowlers are elderly and this is not the season. Seems a great shame when the kids have all the park to play footy in. Guess this amenity will be lost for our elderly folk who like bowling.

I have been given to understand that when the area for the park was bequethed by The Mayow Family a condition was that there MUST always be a bowling green. If no green guess the desendents could take the park park. Does anyone no if this is correct please

Brian, that is completely wrong. The original lease makes no mention of a bowling green, which was created in 1949. Until then the area covered by the tennis courts and bowling green was open parkland. This photograph shows the opening ceremony on 30 April 1949:

Just a reminder of the wonderful news that not only is Mayow Park on the Mayor of London's Priority Parks list, but so is Deptford Park in the north of the borough, so when we in the south vote for Mayow, can we please add a vote for Deptford?
Again, the website is www.london.gov.uk/parks
vote/region/southeast
Many thanks, and let's get that vote out!!!

Steve great picture. That was the time when people took a pride in their appearance. Would be all track suit bottoms now ( with extra large waist lines.

I appreciate your comments re the bowling green. Have spoken to my sourse today who is 92 and always lived in the area. He seemed certain that Lady Mayow made it a condition but of course he could be mistaken

Cllr Wise

I believe you only get 1 vote. Be careful how you use it!

I don't know Deptford Park, but I do use Mayow Park, or I try to. Unfortunately this place really needs some life breathed back into it to encourage its further use. It offers something to both Forest Hill and Sydenham residents, whilst Deptford, although still in LB Lewisham, is very little to do with SE23.

Even some of the few items that were there have been damaged or removed in recent months. It could be so much better.

Please don't accidentally (or otherwise) vote more than once or you risk your votes not being counted at all!

Thanks for explaining Rob. I have voted just for good old Mayow. A park I have known for nearly 60 years.

I appreciate Deptford may be in the same borough but it might as well be in Redbridge or Hillingdon. Cannot see any connection between SE 23 and SE 8. I am certainly not going to visit SE 8 to look at a local park.

I believe we have more in common with Dulwich and Crystal Palace parks both actually ouside the borough.

Steve
Could be that they were opening a newer bowling green in 1949.

I will check with my source whether there was another green in the park before.

Strange if the story about Lady Mayow did not have some truth to it.

Thanks, I do know there is only 1 vote per person, and thankfully that is clearly explained on the GLA website,
And as a local resident I would of course advocate voting for Mayow Park, which I have already done, but if anyone has friends in the north who would prefer to vote for a park there, they have Deptford Park to vote for.
regards

There was definitely no earlier bowling green, Brian. I have a more or less complete sequence of maps of the area and no bowling green is shown until the first post-war map was surveyed in 1951.

I also have a copy of the original conveyance between Mayow Wynell Adams (there was never a "Lady Mayow") and the Lewisham District Board of Works. Adams set no conditions upon the sale of the land, other than they pay him ?8,500 for it.

However, the Board of Works and its successors (which, at the present time, is the London Borough of Lewisham) were bound to ensure the park was "for ever maintained as a place of recreation, and in a good state of repair".

Incidentally, the park was originally called the "Sydenham and Forest Hill Recreation Ground". I've written a brief history of the site <here>.

I suggest that anyone interested in supporting Mayow Park follows Steve's link to read about its history.

Fascinating and very useful, and makes me even more determined to find ways to have this park win the grant

Steve
I have spoken to my source who is 92 and is sure they remember a bowling green there before the war. There is no question about the grand opening of the existing green in 49 but are you certain there was not a green on some sort before the war.

I'm all for a bit of citizen engagement and voted for Mayow Park myself, but this article about the online voting process for the awards is worth a look:

http://www.headstar.com/egblive/?p=179

'Concerns have been raised about the voting process...which appears to have few built-in checks and safeguards'

I wouldn't let it stop you voting for Mayow Park though...

Brian, I wouldn't want to question what your venerable source remembers. All I can say is that a bowling green is not shown on the 1936 OS map (at a scale of 60" to the mile, and showing each individual tree), and it is not mentioned in the 1930s borough guides.

Is it possible that your source remembers informal games of bowls played in the open park rather than a bowling club using a proper bowling green? Or perhaps he/she is thinking of the Forest Hill Bowling Club, a short walk away off Wynell Road.
