Walking for Fitness - any groups in Forest Hill

I'm looking to join or start up a walking fitness group - sounds daft as one can go walking anytime - but I wondered if there were any in the Forest Hill Area for ladies? I don't want to do power walking by myself and a friend living in Clapham (Clarm!) says there's a few over that way. Think Forest Hill would be an ideal location for a small group of lady power walkers! All those hills....

Hi there !
I am keen to do this, as I would like to walk for exercise in the evenings, but do not feel safe doing it on my own.

Quick question - why only ladies?

I would definitely be interested in joining a "Walking for Fitness" Group in the HOP area. It's a great idea and has my support.

I look forward to hearing more!

Hello All
I was looking to start a group of 6 - 10 that does a Forest Hill HOP Loop - Honor Oak Road, HOP, Main Road then back to Forest Hill. Not too long as a starters. We'd aim to speed walk it, nice and quick. Then we could suggest routes each week.

Was thinking of mid week Wednesdays - 7.30 to 8.30pm. No deviations to pubs or tempting food!

@Iwerefuming - the Ladies group was a suggestion which I hope hasn't been taken the wrong way. For personal reasons, I feel safer in a group of women, but I don't want this to be exclusive; chaps welcome.

So how do we do this, get motivated and make it happen? It may even turn into a running group (I can't run for toffee as the saying goes....).

I still have images of IWAF trailing behind a group of ladies power walking round the town, with the Benny Hill theme in the background.

Ha - indeed. The judo would come in handy in that case

My wife barely lets me out on my own on my bike so I cant see her signing up to that one. Might be worth a try though.

I am so keen to do this.
The only problem is that Wednesday nights are the only evening in the week that I cannot do. Obviously if everyone else can do then I cannot expect you to look at another evening.
But I really would like to be a part of this.

Let me know your thoughts.

Crikey - I'm really surprised at the interest.
I'm keen to get this going on a Weds or Thurs - whatever suits the most of us. Happy to do either. I don't claim to be knowledgeable about this at all, other than we'd walk fast and that it may just be fun!
Should we meet up beforehand somewhere say at Canvas and Cream next Thursday evening to gauge opinion? I"d hate to stand at a street corner and no one turn up - and it's open to chaps as my other half may be interested too. It suddenly feels daunting to organise this!

Glad it's such a popular idea. Dont worrry about the responsibility of organizing though, its always daunting but i'm sure once all met it'll be fine! (Bit anxious at the word 'fast' though. Don't mind fastish but have visions of being at the back, lost and sweating!)
I can't make next Thursday though for a meet up but happy to go with what others want (although agree a pre meet would be a good idea- weds?)

I would be quite up for a bit of a walk, I'm normally a runner but a persistent calf strain has put me on the bench. I'm not sure that I'd do every week, but it would be nice to know the option was available.
Any thoughts on making it earlier? I like the idea of Wednesday but 7:30 to 8:30 is bang in the middle of dinner time!! :o)

Yes that sounds a very good idea, I was going to suggest exactly that.
Meet at Canvas and Cream say 6.30 / 7ish next Thursday???
Thoughts ?

Thumbsup

So it looks like it could be a team of 9! I'll be in Canvas and Cream next Thursday from 7pm, and will put a place holder on the table saying FH HOP Walkers so you know who I am.... We can then decide on an evening and a time and take it from there. Maybe TinieM could be our pace walker as a runner?!

I'd like to join in and if the group continues plug it on my soon to be launched fitness site. I'm going to be wanting to feature lots of different activities, particularly inclusive ones as we're hoping to reach people who don't usually visit gyms etc.
