Really? People won't walk that immense distance from the car park round the back of Sainsburys?

s*d your fizzy drink tax. I spot the root cause of the obesity epidemic right there... Smile

I think the whole Forest Hill traffic junction is a nightmare. Why don't they make it like Oxford Circus - ie get rid of all barriers, have pedestrians able to cross from anywhere to anywhere else for about 15 seconds rather than keep having to stop and start on different bits of pavement between junctions. It has improved traffic flow as well as life for pedestrians at Oxford Circus.

That was actually the plan (to remove all traffic barriers) but the traffic boss at Lewisham Council who was strongly in favour of it retired a few years ago and to the best of my knowledge the political will dissipated (if it was ever there) and i doubt it'll ever happen..... lots of good evidence to show that 'shared space' plans work and all associated with this guy http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hans_Monderman

Part of the improvements on Sydenham Road involves removing barriers and having an all-stop phase for pedestrians to cross in all directions. This is planned for two junctions - one at Newlands Park and one at Mayow Road. If these prove successful they could be used to support a campaign to improve the junction in Forest Hill.

What if they made the turning from Dartmouth Rd onto the South Circ left only? (Buses would have to have a special light.)

That would help the congestion on DR, and remove one of the stages from the sequence of lights, giving the South Circ better flow. Plus you would get a single stage pedestrian crossing outside the station.

(Determined right turners would have to use Waldenshaw Rd/Davids Rd.)

Some of the best experiences of traffic junctions in Forest Hill I've had are when the lights are out. People slow down, consider others and generally take turns.

Seriously though, if buses are going to use Dartmouth Road then it needs to be wide enough for buses. At the moment it's a nightmare. Better to acknowledge that we need parking spaces to keep the shops open, we need them near the shops and we don't need the piazza outside Paddy Power/sylvan post which instead of being a haven for winos could create a few decent parking bays.

I do think people won't walk to the shops from Sainsbury's or Perry Vale. Sad but true.

I agree with hopper about that junction being a pain to cross. I get very fed up having to wait twice for the lights to change just to cross one road!

I walk to the shops from the Perry Vale car park quite frequently. Even more frequently when the butchers was open. It only takes an extra few minutes to walk through the underpass and then I go up and down London Road then up and down Dartmouth Road and back to the underpass. The only problem is that 30 minutes free in the car park is usually not quite enough and I usually pay the £1.40 to make sure I don't get a ticket. An hour free would be ideal.

Perryman - I'm a little confused by your suggestion, unless I'm not reading it right. There is no right hand turn out of Dartmouth Road, just left or straight ahead. I don't see how stopping people going straight ahead will make any difference to the flow on Dartmouth. It would potentially remove a phase for traffic coming out of London Road, but that's the one part of the junction that flows pretty well.

That is just it and the point of my earlier post about what they have done in Poynton. I think shared space there, with no lights at all could be transformative for pedestrians and vehicles.

sorry rshdunlop - to clarify, cars driving straight across are effectively turning right onto the stream of traffic on the south circ and the lights need an extra phase to accommodate this manoeuvre.

This additional stage in the light sequence seemingly makes it impossible for pedestrians to have a 1 stage crossing outside a busy station. That of course is my main consideration, but all traffic is also held up.

(Effective) right turns onto the main roads are expensive, whereas the left turn here would not even need a phase - they could filter around in the gaps in the traffic just as the Perry Vale traffic does, via Waldram Pl.

Whilst we on on this right hand turn cull, I suggest we could make the Devonshire Rd junction a left only exit and that would solve much of the traffic problem along that road too.

I really have missed my calling in life....

Anyone proposing to actually do anything about this or are we all just chit chatting and letting off steam on the forum?

Took me 20 minutes to turn right into Dartmouth Road from London Road the other day entirely because selfish/stupid drivers heading up towards Horniman blocked the junction (despite clearly seeing the road ahead was congested).

A bright yellow box junction might help (and the occasional visit from Mr Plod to enforce it) and I would certainly support some traffic cameras. I mean it is the main south circular road and every effort needs to be made to keep traffic moving.

Also, no way should cars be allowed to park on Dartmouth Road along that stretch by the pub on any day of the week. Bonkers. Plenty of places to park* in the area without blocking up a main road. Amazed the bus operator hasn't done something about it.

*just make sure you display a ticket - even if the first two hours is free Smile

What shall we do about it???

I too am amazed that the bus route and the pavement can be so regularly blocked by illegally parked cars.

I don't know if people actually get loads of tickets there (?) - walking (squeezing) past them often, I have never noticed any PCNs stuck to windscreens.

Not so long ago I had a ticket for parking with my wheels just 'one tyre width' up on the kerb to avoid (more) damage to my car from regular construction traffic. Many of the cars parked on Dartmouth Road have half the car up on the pavement.

I would have recommended placing bollards to prevent such parking, but the Council seems to be removing pavement crash barriers now!

It's a combination of cars illegally parked, a skip in the road opposite Sylvan Post and the traffic lights being biased and not letting enough cars through. When there are traffic jams on a Sunday you know there is something badly wrong. The buses are doing a balancing act of trying to pass each other. Have tried to report the lights on the tfl website but after two weeks got an email back saying the map link they had supplied was not working..... so no joy there. A friend has emailed SEE3 to see if the town centre manager can help - do they monitor these posts - surely they must have noticed the problem.

That skip has been there for weeks. It certainly seems to make matters significantly worse. I wonder whose it is, and why they are allowed to leave it there so long?

If someone could take a picture of the skip, especially when it's causing trouble, and send it to Love Lewisham, they might be able to check if it has permission to be there.

We tried to drive up Dartmouth Road yesterday. Stuck behind two buses trying to pass.

I think the skip is for a shop fit. I might be wrong, but I also have to wait to pass it twice a day. I have also noticed that only 3/4 cars pass through the traffic lights at the junction when I'm sure it was 6/7 before, and I have never been obstructed by another vehical. I can say that over the past 8/10 weeks that traffic on Dartmouth Road has been at at a standstill most of the day. This I know to be true as I see it.

I'll try to find out about the skip tomorrow. Why it's there, who it belongs to, how long will it be there etc.
