I am happy and proud to be part of an area with such community spirit. I'm also a little sad that it had to come to this.

Great stuff. Slightly concerned by his 'now looking at the law' comment but hopefully any change would not get voted through.

Really? Isn't this a reference to the amendment to the care bill?
http://www.leighday.co.uk/News/2013/Octo...minute-ame

It seems to have had a pretty smooth passage through parliament so far... has that changed?

As far as i understand it this isnt over - Hunt will try and change the law (so a judge couldn't rule the closure illegal) and proposed the changes again. One saving grace might be that it takes longer than May 2015 for that to happen and the Tories arent looking likely of winning the next election..

Have i got that wrong?

I had thought exactly this lillam and had posted so. I was mistaken and there is still a danger here.

The point of my previous post above is that the government are not waiting to enact a bill for this, they have inserted an amendment into an unrelated (Care) bill making its way thought parliament, that would give a TSA exactly the power that the courts have said they do not have - to close a neighbouring hospital outside of the trust being administered.

A lot of MPs will not want to torpedo a bill aimed at care for the elderly in order to save a hospital outside their constituency, even though this could apply anywhere. Sneaky.

But they acn amend it!

They could just vote out the insertion by raising an amendment.

Yes but it *is* an amendment and it is being steadily passed - 2nd Commons reading to come:

Rather sad that parliament passed the amendment to legalise what was attempted in Lewisham. It is possible that these are the right powers for the Secretary of State, but the way this has come about points to all the worst fears about closing down successful hospitals for financial/political rather than health reasons.

A couple of fun quotes from yesterday's debate:

Quote:
Andy Burnham (Shadow Secretary of State for Health; Leigh, Labour)

That is why I say, Thank God for the people of Lewisham. The Government may well have got away with it if they had picked on a community that does not know how to fight like my hon. Friend's community. I say in all seriousness that they did a service for every community that is worried about its hospital services. That fight inspired everybody. He is right that the arrogance is breathtaking.

and a bit later Joan Ruddock interrupts Jim Dowd:

Quote:
Joan Ruddock (Lewisham, Deptford, Labour)
I want to ensure that my hon. Friend does not end this part of his speech without reminding the House that one of the things that those involved in the TSA process intended to do was sell off half the land occupied by the buildings of Lewisham hospital and that was not in the public consultation document.

Response:

Quote:
Jim Dowd (Lewisham West and Penge, Labour)
It is with some trepidation that I must disagree with my right hon. Friend. In fact, the figure was closer to two thirds of the estate. The scheme was so well engineered that they left the bit that we were keeping, allegedly, for whatever was going to be there (a glorified first aid post) completely landlocked. There was no access apart from via the River Ravensbourne, which is not the mode of transport favoured by most people using Lewisham hospital. Oh yes, it was all worked out well beforehand.

Woolwich Queen Elizabeth Hospital A&E 'not fit for purpose'
This would be the A&E that most patients in Lewisham would have been taken to instead (although Kings would also have had to take significantly more patients too) if Jeremy Hunt had got his way with the plans to close Lewisham A&E.

It seems the Lords have amended the bill so that local doctors have to be in agreement to close services:

That's great news. That clause bordered on something you'd read about in a 1950s dystopian work of fiction.

My friend wrote a letter of complaint to Lewisham Hospital after she visited the A&E. They have made the letter publicly available. Before it goes viral I thought I would give readers on SE23.com a chance to read it.

Haha, that's so funny, I had the exact same experience when I tore a muscle last month and end up in Lewisham A&E in the early hours of the Bank Holiday Monday.
The best and quickest A&E experience I've ever had!
But shhh, don't tell everyone Wink

I've had similar experiences in Lewisham Hospital, both A&E and some of the Outpatient Departments. One of the reasons I supported the Save Lewisham Hospital Campaign.

I have a child who visits A&E so often they're thinking of renaming it after him. We never get anything less than superb attention and treatment there.

A great article. Just keep an eye out another attempt at closing Lewisham down quietly.
