after making huge efforts to make this into a decent pub (after some trouble) apparently it is now planned to turn it into a retail unit and flats. This is sad as there are now few pubs in the area

Seems crazy to redevelop the pub only to turn it into retail shortly thereafter!? Have signed the petition. A good pub/with food (the only one in Catford) will do more to redevelop Catford than flats/mini supermarket.

True, unfortunately. Here is the planning application:

Such a shame about this. I had a lovely meal there a couple of weeks ago, nice atmosphere, nice staff. It always seems very busy when we've been in.

The problem is that Antic only lease the building, and if the owner wants to sell it, there is nothing much they can do.

To update on this. The lovely, friendly and popular Catford Bridge Tavern has had its last last orders.

Apparently the owner sold the Freehold to Tesco - without getting planning permission first. Many local people are very upset about this; it was by far the nicest pub in the area.

A perfect example of individual and corporate greed ruining something local and good. We can do all we can to try and improve areas, but when local land-owners make these sorts of decisions, then what hope is there?

I for one will not be shopping in the Tesco, if it does get planning.

Looking like they may be able to re-negotiate the lease with new owners:

Fingers crossed, this is a great pub with a fabulous kitchen - by far the best pub food locally (and I am a little bit in love with Eddie the chef!).

Interesting update from Brockley Central and the manager odf the CBT
Punch Taverns, who were leaseholders and with whom we had a tenancy at will, served us notice and took the freeholder's offer to end the lease. Punch have been good to us - they tried to assign the lease to us, tried to sub-let to us, both were blocked by freeholder. So we emptied and left the building today.

The freeholder has agreed a deal with a national retailer to take over the space, but the retailer was unaware of the Article 4 Direction put in place by Lewisham Council. Article 4 Direction essentially makes a supermarket impossible. So we're hopeful of either getting a sub-lease from the retailer, or a lease from freeholder. Either way, we're confident we have a good chance - we could re-open soon, all being well!

If I have to go long without some draught Kernal Brewery Pale Ale I may lose the will to live.

In the interim I have asked if The Sylvan Post can get some in, otherwise I will have to make do with bottles form Mr Lawrence I suppose...

Not sure why this thread has been moved away from the discussions of the Wider Area threads?

Surely it's along the same lines as St Davids Coffee House nearly closing, but just outside of SE23 as opposed to buying and selling of products or services?

It is hard to fathom isn't it? A business has been mentioned and this seems to trigger moving the entire thread to a different section.

Please move this back Admin - this is a thread of great interest to many I suspect. It is not the just the pub per se but the wider threat to pubs in general - businesses will inevitably be mentioned, sometimes by the way of banter as in this case.

Alternatively, why not just move all threads/posts into the one section?

The windows are now boarded up. Whilst Lewisham has sent an order preventing the pub becoming a supermarket, I'm not sure that there is any compulsion on the freeholder to return it to being a pub. So we could end up with a boarded up building for many months until it deteriorates and not in a state to be anything (except a boarded up building).

A real shame. Some echoes of this in the Old Bank at HOP - the longer left empty, the less likely it will be taken on.
