The nearest 2 Post Boxes to me in Perry Vale have been closed.
I've no idea if this is permanent or just for the day.
Is this part of general cutbacks before privatization?

It is inconvenient.

If it were permanent there would usually be a sign saying where the nearest is, and that there are not going to be any future collections. Is there no sign on it at all?

Prob just for painting or something. Not expecting a gold one are we ?

The post boxes on Perry Vale (Bakers), Bampton Rd and Dacres Rd are all sealed. It says the nearest are in Silverdale or Woolstone Rd.
But no reason is given for the closures.

Maybe it is connected to the Olympics, but it would not surprise me if many post boxes are near empty at the best of times and their days are numbered.

Take note those on the wrong side of the tracks.

from the Daily Mail

"More postal workers joined an unofficial strike today as the Royal Mail started sealing post boxes because of a mounting backlog of letters."

I am informed by the mail room where I work that the Daily Mail article dates from 2009 - it refers to Patricia Hewitt (Labour) as Secretary of State. The website puts today's date at the top automatically I understand.
So apparently no strike. Anyone got any other info? Apparently the postbox outside the post office is sealed and you are told to go into the WH Smith branch itself.

I have popped a tweet off to Royal Mail about this, so lets see what comes back. Nothing on the website about it. Other than closures for the Olympics which this is clearly not.

According to the post office at WH Smiths, the postman lost his keys and they have all been sealed until the locks are changed.

I guess it's in case somebody finds the keys and starts going through mail...

There is a postbox inside Sainsburys too. Collections at 4.30pm each day.

The one in Shipman Road near the corner shop had a sign saying it would be sealed until 11th (or might have been 12th) September.

Yup, inspired by this thread I had a look at the one outside WH Smith whilst I was waiting at the crossing and it has a hand-written notice on it that it will re-open on the "11/12 September".
