I'm gob smacked by the snobbery!
Is East Dulwich really that fantastic? - I wouldnt swop. There seems to be an odd sense of 'rose tinted glasses' where Lorship Lane is concerned (assuming this is hub of the so called 'East Dulwich cafe culture'). Forest Hill has always had more facilities per square inch - good pubs, plenty of restaurants, hairdressers, a great and unique museum, fantastic public gardens, library, swimming pool (!!!!), not far from Synenham Woods, good familiy accommodation (and not too many high rise flats), and yes a launderette! What sensible community would be without one.
Unfortuantely drunks in the street outside pubs come with any high street with a social life and a smoking ban, so you really should move somewhere else (perhaps the Middle East?) if you dont like it. Better people having a few cheap beers making merry than gangs of p**sed up yoof hanging about causing criminal damage to private property. It's not a no go area outside the Bird in Hand, and some people on this board should really get a grip on reality.

I don't think wanting drunkenness on the inside of the pub not on the outside is snobery. If it is then yes I'm a snob. First time ever I've been accused of that (you should see my house/car!).
I'd just rather Forest Hill had a few less drunks, bookies, fast food joints and empty shops and a few more cafes, butchers, fishmongers etc... surely not too much to aspire to! I think you set your sights too low gingernuts.....

I think it's reality. If you aspire to the way we lived 20 years ago you will never be happy - cos life aint like that any more, due to cut price supermarkets, Saver Centres, people driving to shopping centres rather than choosing to shop locally etc etc. In any case what's the problem with our launderette?

Its opening hours are too short and the staff are about as welcoming as a nursing polar bear?

Nothing wrong with it at all. I like it and use it. I just think it's a shame that it has pride of place in our town centre. Would much rather it be M&S but I'm obviously living in the past!

I would have thought that after passing through the station port-a-cabin, the expectation level is pretty much set.
In any case, wasn't this launderette one of the first to open in London?

To be fair they are using the Queensbury rules.

sorry i know this has no real relevance to 'the bird in hand' thread but why are they outside a shop and not using a park or something? it seems organised, they got gloves.
i mentioned lordship lane, dulwich in another thread before, it isnt snobbery, can you see any empty shops in dulwich? FH is becoming a ghost town, would you really be happy with that? thats what outsiders see and that reflects the value of your home and your health.

The snobbery is that when a new business *does* open up, instead of welcoming it to the area and being pleased that it will provide jobs and will help to stop FH looking like said ghost town, half the forum throws its hands up in horror because it's not Fortnum and Mason's food hall.

I agree Nevermodern when there is talk of an outlet opening there are usually many people saying it is not the sort of operation we want in SE23 will lower the tone.
Classic case was the closing of McDonalds. I said it would just remain empty , others expected Costa Coffee and Cafe Nero to be fighting for the space.

Since McD's closed we have gained two independent coffee shops, which is much better than a large chain coming in. Admittedly they are not on the McD's site but that has planning permission to be knocked down and built with flats above. As yet there is no sign of work on the site but nobody would want to open a shop knowing that it could be demolished in six months, especially considering the price they are asking for the rental.

So in 10 years time we might get another retail outlet in the McD space. Humpf...We should push the council to enforce whoever owns that building to do something with it rather than just leaving it to rot for years on end like Sainsbury's did.

Was it wrong not to want a condom shop in FH? Rather than celebrating it's arrival and the local employment it created I held my head in my hands.....

Lemon Grove and Touarag opening has nothing to do with McDonald's closing, and the McDonald's site being and remaining empty has nothing to do with its proposed redevelopment.
Brian's right. There was a hurrah all round when chavvy old Maccy D's closed down and what's there is now infinitely worse.

No, it's not wrong to not want a condom shop in FH. Especially if the choice is between a condom shop and a greengrocer.
But that's not the choice. It's a shop employing people...
..or an empty shop.

an empty shop that makes the area look uncared for or an condom shop that makes the area look tacky and sleazy..... I'd rather an empty shop.
