Lewisham Police warning following burglaries where doors and windows left open
Are you enjoying the hot weather? So are the burglars. DON’T let the rain be the only thing that spoils your summer!
There has been a sharp increase in the number of burglaries to peoples’ homes in the past few days with suspects gaining entry via open doors or windows, both during the day and night.

Detective Inspector Ian Cameron - Serious Acquisitive Crime, Lewisham Borough Police: " 75% of burglaries occur where premises have been left insecure. Burglars will always target properties where windows and doors have been left open. Do not become another victim of crime by forgetting to lock up your home and valuables, remember, burglars also enjoy the long, hot summer days, more time to commit offences!"

The incidents reported overnight:
1 Beachborough Road, Bromley - date 24/07/12 at 01:50 hours, a suspect was disturbed in the hallway. Entry via window left open.
2 Durham Hill, Bromley - date 23/07/12 at 17:15 hours, entry gained via an unlocked UPVC front door.
3 Charlecote Grove, SE26 - date 22/07/12 at 10:00 hours, entry gained via ground floor windows which had been left open.
4 Francemary Road, SE4 - date 22/07/12 at 10:30 am, a suspect/suspects entered via the front garden which had an open gate.

High value items were stolen in each case, including jewellery, mobile phones and pedal cycles.
Remember:
1 ALWAYS be vigilant
2 ALWAYS close and lock doors and windows if you are going out, even if it’s only for a few minutes, and at night, even if it’s hot.
3 ALWAYS lock garages and sheds with a padlock as a bare minimum and lock garden gates securely.
4 ALWAYS remove ladders and garden tools from your garden and put them away securely.
5 ALWAYS check the identity of cold callers.
6 ALWAYS fit security measures such as alarms, chains and timed lights.
7 ALWAYS remove valuables, keys and documents from full view of windows and letterboxes.
8 ALWAYS use security markers on your valuables, such as your postcode, and register your possessions with a serial number at: http://www.immobilise.com.

Criminals are particularly targeting homes with UPVC doors because homeowners are not locking them properly. If you have UPVC front or back doors, remember:

· ALWAYS turn the key fully and then check the door is securely locked - Most doors have a five-lever dead bolt system which is activated when the inside handle is lifted upwards. If UPVC doors are not locked properly, all but the central bolt can be disarmed and burglars can force the door relatively easily.

Turn up the heat on burglars and stay safe this summer.

If you suspect anyone of suspicious behaviour report it immediately. In an emergency call 999. If it is not an emergency call 101. Alternatively, you can call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
