Hello all

Are you interested in learning or practising languages locally? Language Lounge is a not-for-profit language club that has been organising free or low cost classes and conversation groups in SE15 / SE22 since 2008. We offer the chance to share the cost of a language teacher or, to learn without paying a fee, by swapping your language skills. We prefer people to swap if possible. If you're interested please read the info below, check the latest update - see the last post in this threat - and send a private message for an invitation to come along for a taster. You will receive a reply by email.

We meet on most Mondays and Wednesdays throughout the year, at The Mag, a gastropub at the junction of Pellatt Road and Lordship Lane, SE22 8HA. On Mondays we meet downstairs. On Wednesdays we usually meet in the private room upstairs which is also a great space for language groups (two flights stairs though). We run for six weeks at a time, with breaks for Christmas/New Year, local school half term hols, Easter and all of August. The current session starts on Monday 16 April and runs for six weeks until Weds 23 May. Following sessions are: Mondays 11, 18, 25 June, 2, 9, 16 23 July (7 weeks). Then we take a six week summer break, and after the holidays the next 6 week session will run on Mons 10, 17, 24 September, and 1, 8, 15 October. Wednesday sessions run on Weds in the same weeks.

Our key languages are French, English, Spanish, Italian, Russian and Mandarin. We have members who are willing to offer several other languages on request, including Xhosa, Polish and Turkish.

Groups are taken by a mix of paid teachers and volunteers. Where the teacher is paid, we share the fee among a small group - no more than 6 in a group, of whom 4 or 5 come on any given week - so everyone gets a lot of contact and speaking practice - and it's never more than £5 each. Most of the groups are free though and run as swaps. When there is no fee for the group, we expect you to be willing, if asked by the Organisers, to help other people practise your own native language in exchange. If you have teaching experience, or you feel confident enough, you can offer some structured lessons, following your own lesson plans or a textbook. Or, you can just help a couple of people with conversation practice. The Organisers will organise with you in advance.

If you're interested in coming to Language Lounge, it's really helpful if you can check your language level first, so you can join the right group. Please take a look at this and let us know which of the levels described is closest to yours: - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Common_Euro..._Languages - or you can google Kings College or the LSE evening language classes, and take one of their self assessment tests, or you can try one of the tests on About.com.

Everyone is welcome to come along and try a "taster" class first, without commitment.

Please bear in mind that we're completely run by volunteers, who also work full time, so it may be a few days before we're able to reply to your message. You can also check Twitter: @LangLounge for updates, and we will soon have a website.

We also do volunteer translation for some international voluntary organisations and can offer translators and student linguists interesting and rewarding voluntary assignments and the opportunity to build a translation portfolio towards membership of professional bodies. All work is credited.
