Frighteningly near local schools at chucking out time including that of my own child and the rest of my family were in the area when it happened. Its a miracle that more weren't hurt or injured. Reminiscent of the Stockwell shooting when someone just fired indiscriminately into a shop leading to a young child fighting for her life.

It is frightening to have such an event occur in broad daylight on a road that you frequently walk down. If it hadn't been for the fact that it started raining heavily around that time I would probably have been walking past!

I wasn't aware that there were that many funerals in Camberwell Old Cemetry. I thought it was kind of a 'dead' cemetry if you excuse the pun with active burials being more in the 'New' cemetry near HOP station. However there also appeared to be a well attended funeral when I was passsing just after lunch on Wednesday, as I watched car after car drive in to what seemed to be a limited parking area.

I am glad to see the media refer to a fatal shooting in 'East Dulwich'. That is the sort of publicity I am happy to see Forest Hill and Honor Oak avoiding!!

What makes me angry/frightened is that there were loads of school children around at the time as it was school pick up time. It was busy and anyone could have been caught in the firing line. The Government must reverse the cuts to the police - cuts in general, in fact.

Hoona, I am not sure there is a direct connection between cutting police budgets and a shooting like this.
The fact the police have the resources to flood the area to gather intell, and help with related matters kind of suggests they have the manpower.

I note that some of the media were referring to yesterday's burial of a 17 year old who died in a car accident as a 'gangland funeral'. I suspect that investigations will reveal a pretty complex set of events leading up to yesterday's horrific murder. I was walking past the cemetery to the 63 bus stop as mourners were arriving and was amazed at how many people were pouring into the cemetery. I saw one report that said 300!

At noon today, Forest Hill Road was still sealed off at the scene, at least in the direction towards Peckham.

I guess the fact that it is SE22 entitles the area to be called East Dulwich even if we think of it as Honor Oak. And to confuse matters further it is the Camberwell Old Cemetery!

Billham - The old cemetary is filling up fast actually - its all part of the same consultation as the new cemetary near HOP station. It's really worth a wander round. Part of the grounds have been left to grow wild like Nunhead. In the middle of this is a pristinely maintained war grave for a VC recipient. The new graves are going in towards the Langton Rise end.

I agree with the other posters - this is shocking and tragic but fortunately rare in the Forest Hill area.

Initial findings from the Met's investigation show the deceased was NOT involved, but was an innocent bystander

Not always as black and white as it all seems, can't just cry 'gang' and close the case.

"can't just cry 'gang' and close the case."

Oh really?

From the story you linked to:
Last week, Detective Superintendent Gordon Allison, of Operation Trident, said the boy whose funeral it was had "contact with gang members".
But he added that police were keeping "a very open mind" about the motive for the attack.

Just because the guy who was shot was the wrong guy, doesn't mean it isn't gang-related activity. Just as it doesn't mean it definitely was gang-related either.

Yes, really.
I think what you have just written supports what I am saying rather than argues against it.
My point is, as some of the observers had just screamed its a gang shooting, and were happy to leave it there, the Met did not, and continued supplying information to the public until we know what we need to.

If everything becomes related purely by association, we are going to get in a right mess.

Hmmm. And yet it appears there were gang links on both the levels of the guy who was shot having gang contact and the funeral outside which he was shot being a gang one. There's also the general background thought that most of those who carry guns that actually work are probably in gangs, however defined.

And on the other hand 'gang' has become a bogeyman word, a way of talking about the dangerous, the other, the to be excluded.

To put it another way, the right wing will feel that as long as they keep on shooting each, it's fine; the left wing will view it as an avoidable tragedy.

According to the Guardian yesterday the victim was not connected to gangs.

Quote "Khan is described by police as having nothing to do with gangs".

But as he wasn't the intended victim that's hardly the end of it. What about the guy pulling the trigger?

My comment was simply to correct the earlier mis-statement about the victim's links with gangs.
