I've noticed some weeks ago that one of the homes in the nice terrace of 1960's Norman Starratt houses on Dartmouth road appears to have been completely gutted leaving a gaping void in the row. Anyone know whats going on? I cant believe planning permission would be given to build a random 'grand design' in the middle of a terrace of matching houses.
I love 1960's architecture and find it heartbreaking seeing that the guts have been ripped out of one the houses.Sad

A rare species someone who loves 60's buildings. I assume you spend your holidays in Wellesey Rd , Croydon.

Not sure which houses you refer to ?

The row next to the school on the corner of Round Hill (i think thats the name). They are set back from the road on the Left hand side if you are walking down from Kirkdale.

I saw it too and the first floor is still there (or was last week) so I think they are just replacing the ground floor windows in quite an extreme way.

Not seen a planning application for it but I think it may have sold recently?

I did wonder if anyone knew of a planning application. When I walked by the ground floor was reduced to earth floor and external walls-If thats how the builders replace windows remind me not to use themUnsure

Presumably a completely new internal layout without any change of size, so it must constitute permitted development.

When I walked past it seemed to be nothing other than the shell of the building, no back or front walls and no staircase.

I know someone who lives in one of those houses, will inquire and report.

Thumbsup Thanks Baboonery, I am just curious as they are by a really cool 60's architect and I'm shocked and saddened to see one of them utterly gutted like that.

Possibly doing a thermal efficiency makeover as well?

I had a 60's house with warm air heating which was ducted under the floors but I wanted insulated concrete floors with piped underfloor heating. The necessary works left the place looking like it had been bombed! Sleeper walls, floor joists and untold galvanised ducting out and tons of concrete, piles of insulation and miles of pipework in. It also gave me the opportunity to lower the finished floor level thereby increasing the ceiling height of the gound floor, which was probably the most beneficial and worthwhile part of the deal.

Only the side walls and floor will be structural. Everything else can come out pretty much. Removing the staircase is serious but not impossible.

I am fairly sure one was for sale on http://www.themodernhouse.co.uk a while back but its not there now and isn't showing up on http://www.houseprices.co.uk, but that generally has a 3-4 month delay on sales because of land registry.

Would be interested to know the story too...
