The Good :
- Transport infrastructure with easy and fast access to shopping and nights out in Croydon, Surrey Quays, Canary Wharf, East Dulwich and West End.
- The Hob pub for bands and comedy nights.
- The view on a clear day from the top of Horniman Gardens.

The Bad :
- You can't have proper night out in Forest Hill where you eat in a restaurant, hit a few decent bars afterwards and stay out till 1am. Not as buzzing as Crystal Palace or East Dulwich.
- The depressing high street. It's a shame that the only new businesses are the poundshop (where Blockbuster was) and a Sue Ryder charity shop.
- Now that Forest Hill is on the tube map, worried that too many BTL investors might take over and there will be a transient population instead of a stable community.

and The Ugly :
- Forest Hill Station, the cheaping looking, horribly designed footbridge and the underpass.
- The shopfronts on Dartmouth Road.
- The yellow stencils of dogs on pavements courtesy of Lewishan Council.

Pros
Green spaces, transport links, reasonable by London standard house prices.

Cons
Poor choice of GOOD pubs. Blythe Hill Tavern & All Inn One being the exceptions. Underpass and alleyways. Litter and dog poo .

i live near the pool, and it's only a short walk to just a great butcher & fishmonger called billings, just beyond sydenham station. you can get decent fruit and veg nearby too.

i know it's not quite se23, but it's pretty local, and such a pleasure to be able to buy quality meat and fish that's not been sweating away in supermarket packaging, and to be able to ask for advice on cooking, or which cuts of meat would be best.

right. that's my favourite thing near forest hill...........

and the horniman museum & gardens are my favourite things that are actually in forest hill! i'm sure the pool willbe right up there when finished, though....

Best:

Horniman Museum and Gardens.
The excellent train service (on the whole!)
Cafes.

Worst:

Empty shops on Dartmouth Road
The lack of stock in Sainsburys which forces you to travel to Bell Green or East Dulwich for something which isn't bread or milk.
The 356 bus.

Great set of 'loves' and 'hates'

I also love Havelock Walk, the ski shop, and Stag and Bow (although I'd love them even more if they opened on a Monday ;-)

If any of you want to expand on these ideas and get involved in trying to address some of the negatives there is an event upstairs in the Hob at 7.30pm on Wednesday 21st for just such a purpose.....

Damn! I'm off to the movies on Wednesday-would love to have gone.
Totally agree about Havelock Walk and Stag and Bow-esp as I dont work on Monday. Dapper on Dartmouth road has some cool stuff too.
Having only lived here for for 6months I have to say that I'm so glad I chose to move here.
Smile

Like:

The Horniman Museum and Gardens
Havelock Walk Open Studios
Independent shops and coffee shops in London Road and Dartmouth Road

Dislike:

Forest Hill Station - such an ugly structure
Too many charity shops and pound shops
Wetherspoons at The Capitol (a beautiful building put to the wrong use!)

Also wish there were more car parking facilities

top 3:

That the bigger chain branches (Sainsbury's and WHSmiths) have stayed.

Horniman museum.

Primary schools

bottom 3:

The pedestrian link from London Rd to Perry Vale (Out of sync traffic lights, lack of ramp or lift for the graffiti underpass, lack of crossing on the PV 'Paschoud' bend).

The rickety German bridge still without hand rails.

Secondary schools

Thumbup
1. The three lovely trees and all those lavender plants (amongst many other types of plants) in front of Forest Hill Station.

2. The laundromat opposite Forest Hill Station. Sitting in there listening to local gossip makes me feel like I'm in an episode of Eastenders. "Didya hear whose just got 'erself pregnant?" It's a toss up between this forum and the laundromat on where I get the most local news.

3. My great neighbours in our street and further afield. Having terrific people around makes life that much better.

Thumbdown
1. Some of our local shops that don't have their opening times displayed. The big chains do this well. The little independents could pick up their game. You know who you are!

2. The rat run that my street can be. You dirty rats! You know who you are!

3. Doggie doo-doo on the pavements. You know who you are!

As already mentioned the green spaces and leafy feel
Varied architecture
Creativity and cultural life like art and sculpture open days, varied activities at The Hob, dance

Dislike:
underpass by station
run-down faded parts and empty shops
too many chicken and chips places

My HOP ones:

I like:

1) Eating out at Babur, or La Querce - now we have a 9 month old and La querce is just so family friendly.

2) East london line \ overground. Air conditioned, new big trains taking me to work near Liv Street in 20 minutes - yes please!

3) Green spaces - Blythe Hill - good playground, great for kites, One Tree Hill, close to Crystal Palace Park, Beckenham Place Park and Dulwich Park.

4) Friendly, community based feeling - feels safe.

5) Lots of baby \ toddler groups and good primary schools.

I don't like:

Not much really. I'd like a lift at the station to make it easier with the pram, otherwise all good.

We have lifts at Forest Hill station. Why not at HOP?

It could be related to the fact that Forest Hill has twice the number of passengers as Honor Oak Park. But lifts will be installed at Honor Oak Park by the end of 2013.

Pros

I love my street for its varied architecture, lovely people, trees and views. My road doesn't feel like it is in London.

I love the many and varied local parks. Including gems like sydenham wells.

The overground has been a revelation. FH is now closer to the City and the wharf.

A really good choice of excellent local primaries like Eliot bank.

Horniman on the doorstep is great. [/align]

It is clean.

Cons

It is cut in half by a very busy road.

The station is the natural focal point and the building is horrid and the service begrudging.

Shortage of great local shops (ie butcher; grocer; quality restaurants)

Dominos don't deliver yet (that's a joke btw)

The railway station should be replaced.

+ves

- Great train service
- Dartmouth Arms does great food
- The Tea Pot does great tea and cakes
- I love my house and the architecture generally
- I quite like all the cafes and fast food places (which might explain my expanding wastline...)

-ves

- Agree that the underpass could do with a bit of a tidy up
- Wouldn't mind a few more independent shops rather than more charity shops
- The shops we do have should open on a Sunday!
