I had picked up on that vibe from a few lads when I had my phone out so put it away quickly. I'd agree that people should stay alert on Forest Hill Road and around Honor Oak Park tube station. Youths from poorer backgrounds and definitely targeting this area.

I do hope by suggesting they may be from poorer backgrounds you are partially excusing their action.
Robbery with violence is a seroius crime and should be dealt with as that.
Minimum 5 years .
No one is poor compared with most people in Africa or Central America. Are they going Hungry?

Why do I feel like I'm being told off? Do you think a well brought up young man with a good education and supportive family/friend network would be swiping phones when he should be at school or work?
Poverty causes crime.

I think people of all social classes have the ability to commit crime - they might just approach the act differently.
It is important to recognise that not everyone on a low income commits crime, some are just too busy trying to make ends meet and keep a roof over their families heads to go out stealing phones etc.
Hooray Henry/Henrietta criminal types are too busy swinging off the cenotaph, trying to arrange illegal hunts and planning how to 'legally' rob us via banking and political careers.
Being cash poor doesn't mean you have poorer morals, are less honest etc.
*steps down from soapbox*

I agree Merlin of course all sections of society , from benefit classes to affluent , have the ability and do commit crime. All should be treated equally .
I was born in 40's and most people had less than the so called poorer classes have today. There cannot be many , if any , people in UK who are poor by world standards .
If they need a phone then get a job.

The yoof on his scooter came from a very nice middle class background so the Lewisham police tell me. Poverty is a factor but a lot of the lower level crime like street robbery is as a result of a number of things, boredem, peer pressure, fun are all factors.
Scum takes many forms so lets not try and classify it into neat social strata.

Why has this thread been moved? Surely it would be good for the residents of Honor Oak Park to be aware of these muggings?

I met a very nice young policeman this morning in Grierson Road on the way to the station and told him about this thread - he was not aware of the website and made a note of it so hopefully will be able to make use of it as open source intelligence

That's really good. I haven't seen an increased police presence despite 5 or 6 snatchings on the same 100m stretch of road over the last few days.
Admin, can you please move this thread back to the main board?

The thread got moved because the conversation became a more general one about yoof crime etc. On this forum, you have to keep on topic or the thread will either get shunted or be split.

The admin should just ask people to stay on topic then, not move the thread. Not everyone is on Edf and it is important people know about these muggings. I just found out my neighbour got done too. The more people know, the safer they can make themselves.

well hopefully all the victims have reported the incidents to the police and SNT - they should then get a good description of the muggers and catch them
