This was my first visit to the new Post Office. Service was great , she was smiling and polite.

I know this has been raised before but seems nothing at all has been done.
On Sundays and only seems to be Sundays rather posh cars completely block the pavement outside W H Smith and Son. I am at a loss to understand why these people think this is acceptable . I must assume the passed their UK driving test.
Also strange no wardens or police seem to be doing anthing about this.
It may not be a major problem but strange that it is not being jumped on when parking on a yellow ( no where near as serious ).
Someone said the Police read this site so let us hope something is done.

Anyone know if smiths/post office are open today (snowy Monday), they aren't answering the phone and I have some parcels I'd rather not lug down there if it is closed?

It was closed a few minutes ago, about 13.15. Almost everything is, except Sainsburies.

Royal Mail closed early what would HM say.
Believe they stayed open during The Blitz.

No post today. It seems our post men and women are not as hardy as they once were. In some ways it is a relief as it gives me a break from having to go out and repost the wrongly delivered letters.

I no symphasise with the postal ladies andgents. Not an easy job in best of times.

What if this weather goes on for a few days. UK will be at a standstill.

Brian, if you are bothered about the cars, parked on the pavement why not take a photo and email it to the Council highways department with a complaint. Its plain obstruction of a public highway. Technically the police could get involved but it would be difficult to get them out for this I think. I agree its not right although I'm not down there on a Sunday so I don't notice it. I think only doing something direct will work.

It seems likely WH Smith will survive this slump. But in time of the next big slump when everyone is comfortable with shopping online they will go the same way as Woolworths.

I was concerned about our local W H Smith and Sons prior to The Royal Mail moving in.
Too be honest not sure how they managed to keep going before as upstairs usually very quiet.
I think the move of The Royal Mail has saved them for the moment.

The post office is closed today due to a "security incident". Does anyone have any more details?

Hard to believe the criminal classes would try to rob an upstairs post office. A long way out with many people to witness.

I am sure that if the likes of Jonathan Aitken, Neil Hamilton, Jeffrey Archer or Conrad Black wanted to rob our Post Office, they would instigate a whole new interpretation of the phrase "the Butler did it"

I was woken up by the Helicopter which I though was going to land on the roof. I thought it was an odd choice/target since the Post office is upstairs.

Does anyone know why WH smith was cordoned off by a yellow crime scene notice , and with police car outside and officer inside around 4:30pm this afternoon ?

There was a police helicopter circling over the centre of Forest Hill at lunchtime today so wonder if that was anything to do with whatever was going on at the Post Office?

no idea, but it had started much earlier as the police were in there already when we passed there around 12:45

they already had printed signs on the windows saying they were closed because of "an incident", so presumably from even earlier

A robbery or attempted robbery by 3 youths.

They fled over the roof at the back, over the fence of platform 1, ran right over all four tracks and leaped over the fence on the other side into the car park.

A couple of them were wearing fluorescent jackets, one of them was top to toe in it with a black peaked balaclava.

So easily could have had 3 deaths on the track if there had been a train on the fast tracks.

So sad.
No doubt if one of these gentlemen had been hurt crossing the line the railway company would have been in the dock.
To my mind anyone who runs on a railway track should be aware of what could happen.
Perhaps they can read and had studied the timetables.

I have thought it strange whilst attending the Post Office that the door seems to be always open.

I hope no innocent people were hurt

Travelled by train this morning and amazed how they got from the balcony to the railway line.
Maybe there are stairs I could not see from the track but if there is hope they improve security for the future.
