Anti-social behaviour in Trilby Road area

Remembering back to the mid 80's when I was a 15/16/17 year old, I would certainly like to hang out with my mates as much as I possbly could.

I think my curfew was before dark when 15, then when I left school at 16 and started working and paying rent I could stay out until whenever.

The choices of what one could do with ones friends during the evening though could be quite limited, normally revolving around saving any money I had for the weekend and then visiting a pub in which we had figured you could get away with being served in.

Around 15/16 we were in the park with a big bottle of Woodpecker being handed around, (before the arrival of "alco-pops").

Looking now, I can understand why people might find this anti-social, but from my perspective at the time, it was very much about being pro-social with my friends.

Unfortunately the British love of social boozing is imprinted on us from a young age and from what I see of kids on the streets and my own experience, as soon as you can find a shopkeeper who will serve the oldest looking of your group of friends or you find a pub where they don't stringently check for age, then that's what you will be doing.

With limited funds/employement or expensive education, what else are 16/17 years old meant to do?

I certainly recall hate being told what to do at that age, but not actually looking for trouble. I was just wanting to "hang" with my mates.

I wouldn't want these kids hanging about boozing on my wall either, but it seems path of the course for groups of kids to hang about and to wander about our streets until they can legally socialise in the acceptable sociable establishments that are pubs.

Unfortunately kids of this age will be shunned from pillar to post because nobody really wants them hanging about near their property, shops or parks.

I was watching outside my front window on Sunday and lots of kids from out street were cycling up and down and skateboarding and it felt good. The sun was out, the street is pretty quiet and there are lots of families living in the area. Then somehow there comes a point a few years later we don't see them as cute kids playing anymore and we're supposed to fear them or shun them.

It could drive you to drink. Wink

15/16/17 year olds want to hang about with their friends, but because either a) the Government can't afford to provide social activities or b) The private sector can't make any money out of them, they will continue to socialise as pariahs for those excluded couple of years.

An argument could be made for them to play sports, but usually a kick about in the park would only emege in the summer. Plus with post code territorial disputes who know how limited things may be for venturing to parks ort other area etc.

I'd imagine this kind of problem has existed in some shape or form since the emergence of the teenager in the 50's and without some radical change in western philosophy, kids will continue gather where they are not wanted into the future.

bensonby - I think if you read my original post I mentioned anti-social behaviour in reference to other incidents in the area which the met police mentioned in a letter to all residents within the area - it was in reference to damage to property/cars/noise disturbance etc...

mgmonkey - great post, the said thing is there are more and more cuts to youth clubs/sport etc which is mainly why these problems have cropped up.

I meant - 'the sad' thing is not 'said' - sorry!

There is a church at the top of Trilby Road. Do they not have any activities for youths?

Churches wouldn't appeal i'd imagine. They are quite fond of telling people what to do.

I live on Trilby Road and use the alley way twice a day. In the evenings on ocassion I have noticed a few youths hanging around but I make eye contact with them and they look away. I have shoes older than most of them so they don't intimidate me.

That said...I wouldn't walk the alley after dark.

I was surprised to get the letter from the Met about the anti-social behaviour. I thought last year was bad with the mini bikes going up and down the road for a spell - so far this year I haven't heard them, although the letter made mention of them.

Hi Sassy! I thought the same. I was talking to a neighbour last night and apparently there have been a few 'things' going on - including a man lurking in someones garden about two weeks ago. Luckily one of the neighbours called the police. So make sure you lock up!

See previous discussion:
http://www.se23.com/forum/showthread.php...4#pid13514

I used to use this pathway twice a day as well, but haven't used it since crossing the railway in 2007.

The main reason for the minor improvements that were made is that it is possible to see from one end to the other with little chance of any nasty 'surprises' waiting around the corner as the whole path is much more visible. If you have any concerns you can detour before reaching it. The lighting was also significantly enhanced so that in the dark it is one of the more visible pathways - which should deter most criminal or anti-social behaviour.

I know this won't actually make anybody feel safer, but I think this path is no more dangerous than most streets in Forest Hill.

I dont use the pathway, so sorry I cannot comment. But glad you posted and have opened this discussion. I have spotted in the past week or so, a couple of lads hanging around the station /outside Barclays/ landrette corner just hovering ... just watching. Seems very uncomfortable one on each corner and a very low key communication between them the odd nod and glance. I have seen them a couple of times during the day and just find it quite odd and uncomfortable. Has anyone else picked up on this?

Mickey
Thanks for the info but it is best to put as much detail as you can when reporting this sort of thing. For example at what time were they loitering?

Mickey - I have noticed this as well, I don't think it's a new thing. There was another thread about this before I think. There was a rumour about some people watching the Santander cash machine from outside Wetherspoons and then mugging people as they walked under the railway underpass - was this a rumour?

Now we don't want to start getting paranoid! Mellow

I'm not naive, but I don't want to be seeing "boogey men" everytime I step out my front door. Unsure

It was the same lads as I recongnised the headwear of one the lads. I am not making any accusations, just merley point out somthing which I have observed and found very uncomfortable and wondered if any one else had noticed this behaviour.

I own a house on trilby, my wife had a problem with a group of lads lifting her skirt up as she walked through said alley. We're currently living abroad, but she's made it clear that she doesn't want to use it when we get back. I love the street, but would welcome the local police making this an area to focus on.

Herbert - that's awful Your poor wife! Did she speak to the police about it? I think more people need to contact the Perry Vale PCSO's to report anything that goes on (no matter how small).

I contacted Lewisham Council last year about cutting back part of the tree that overhangs one of the new lights - they replied with we will look into it. What's the point in new lighting if it is so covered over with foliage it is useless? Maybe some of us need to get together to cut it back ourselves?

That is disturbing Herbert!

I think Tilly we all need to contact the Council. It's easy to fob off an individual, if several residents start bombarding them they may, just may, get their fingers out!

No its true a friend of mine got mugged (Aged 66) on the corner of Dacres Road and Perry Vale. He said he noticed the group loitering outside Wetherspoons prior to the incident. They were 4 black youths aged between 17 and say 21 and they had push bikes.

About 2 months later I noticed 4 youths matching that description on bikes cycling around aimlessly near Wetherspoons. It became obvious that they were eyeing me up. I decided to pretend to head for the tunnel and sure enough they appeared to be rushing towards me. When I crossed the road I went into the betting shop instead and they
waited outside except one who followed me inside. There is CCTV in the betting shop. When I got home I notified the police. I am fairly certain one of them is very local because I have seen him in the area several times
