On Sunday 30th January, Bromley Synagogue is planting a tree in Horniman Gardens to celebrate the Jewish New Year for Trees (Tu b'Shavat) and to remember Janusz Korczak. This year is the 100th anniversary of the visit to Forest Hill of Janusz Korczak who, together with the children in his care, perished in the Holocaust. More details of Korczak's visit to Forest Hill can be found at http://sydenhamforesthillhistory.blogspo...rczak.html
Bromley Synagogue would like to welcome the local community to join us for a short ceremony planting the tree at 2pm on Sunday 30th January in Horniman Gardens (close to the Sunken Garden - see map).

Thanks for inviting us all to this, Michael; it was very moving. It was good to see the Mayor and at least two of our ward councillors there. Is there to be any explanatory text on or near the new tree?
And thanks to the rabbi for introducing us to Tu B'shavat. I was impressed by the number of (apparently) fluent Hebrew speakers we have amongst us!

yesterday's tree planting was just so good, very interesting story from steve grindlay as always. When you get two Rabbi's
together you always get a great double act. The tree will now be my special place in the gardens.

Belle,
I'm really please you had a look at his biography on Wikipedia as this was one of the key reasons for dedicating the tree to him, so that more people would know who he is.
We were fortunate to have with us a lady who lives in Sydenham and met Korczak in the Warsaw ghetto, creating a real sense of continuity from Korczak's visit to Forest Hill 100 years ago, his contemplation in the park, to the planting of the tree this weekend.

just wanted to mention, if you are interested, the film by Polish filmaker A. Wajda "Dottor Korczak"
If you have ever seen Life Is Beautiful (by italian funnyman and director Roberto Benigni) you may think this is where he got the inspiration from
