Yey! Direct line to Upper Street's design stores and Paul A Young's hot chocolate (best in London by far) well before the winter ends and the hot chocolate is whisked away.

I heart the new extension.

Well said east of the track. Why do so many people locally support othet teams than our own Crystal Palace. Shame.

Because some people were born and raised elsewhere and still like to support the team they grew up with. I know many Londoners who support a non-local team (a team they have supported all their lives) and also support their local team, as long as the two ar not in direct competition with each other. I don't see any shame in loyalty.

Dear Doctor
I do agree if one is born say in Burnley then right you support that team all your life.
My complaint is with people born and bred in the area who the support Man U , Arsenal etc just because they are a big club.

Fair enough, but that isn't always the case. I find it's never a good idea to make assumptions on the basis of forum posts, there is so much you don't know about the people behind the posts.

Fair enough rshdunlop!

I started supporting Palace when I moved to Coulsdon, but still follow my beloved Dover Athletic too! Why not come to Selhurst Park (rather than the Den!) when the Gooners are playing away? In fact, big news to come tomorrow...you might be able to walk to CPFC games soon!

Back on subject though, great news if the extension is opening sooner than planned. Must say I've been really impressed since the line (re)opened.

Anyone got an idea on when the Overground will be extended the other way to Clapham? I commute on the train to Victoria these days and the half hourly service is a bit restrictive.

I supported Palace all my life , or from 8 when my Grandfather took me in 57 to see them tharsh Newport County.
Lived in SE 26 then and most people my age at school followed Palace.
Millwall were considered , as they are now , beyond the Pale.

For those who are as puzzled as me, Wikipaedia tells us that 'Gooners' are supporters of the Arsenal football club, which is based in north London. It is derived apparently from the club's nickname 'Gunners' (but how did the 'u' get lengthened? North of England influence?)

The new extension to Clapham Junction via Peckham Rye was supposed to open in May 2012, however it's been delayed until December 2012.

When the line opens, there will be 4tph running every 15 minutes.

For now, it's possible to board a Crystal Palace train and change for a Southern service.

Now I don't know much about football (I understand it is some form of hobby where people watch millionaires cuddle, spit, and occasionally kick a ball) but I thought Arsenal was a local team, at least until 1910.
I'm told that, unlike the players and managers, fans have to stay loyal to a team (except when they move to Milton Keynes, obviously), but it seems that good South East Londoners are bound to support the local team from Woolwich. Crystal Palace weren't even in London when they were founded in 1924.

I hope my ignorance doesn't show Laugh

Yes, but when did Sydenham/Forest Hill stop being in Kent and became part of London?!

ummmm... i believe that Arsenal were originally a south London team based out of/somewhere near Woolwich, the old royal or military arsenal (woolwich Arsenal, where they kept gun(ner)s). Apparently they moved to N London, but I have absolutely no idea why. Not as far as the Dons did though.

This may be common knowledge, if so, apologies

Oherwise very interested in the service extension to Highbury, although the opportunity of gooners tickets doesn't fall within the limits of my purse anymore Sad
