In 2003 Lewisham council adopted the following document to show how Forest Hill should develop.
http://www.lewisham.gov.uk/Environment/P...mework.htm

It is interesting to see the plans for Forest Hill town centre and I wanted to post it here as it will be easier for everybody to refer back to than trying to find it on the council website.

I hope this also leads to some discussion about what is needed for the town centre beyond the obvious 'we need a coffee shop'.

These documents are wonderful and well worth a read.

On one hand its good to see some of the themes developing on the ground e.g. redevelopment of Sainsburys with arguably decent architecture, and the developments along the railway.

On the other, the key issue of the railway station and WHSmith's building being a frankly pathetic centrepiece for Forest Hill shows no sign of real progress. There are promises of improved access over the railway and no doubt a paint job with the ELX, but the reality is that the building needs bulldozing. Presumably Lewisham approved these horrible sheds!? I see Network Rail being a very poor neighbour in this respect - the station has incredible revenues - but there are no plans for real improvement.

Question is - what can we do about this???

It's probaby a better idea to focus our efforts on TfL rather than Network Rail, simply because they're the ones likely to be running FH station sometime after 2010: they'll become the largest provider of services to and from the station. Network Rail aren't going to be interested in ploughing money into something which is likely to be taken off their hands in a couple of years' time.

I agree, Les, that they're really interesting documents. It's a shame that some of the easier-to-achieve aspects of the framework haven't been put into practice, like better signage, de-cluttering of FH centre, recalibrating of the pedestrian crossings at the train station, and tree planting of london road. You'd have thought some of them could've been achieved in four years.
