There is not so far to run if I am late for a train!

These are vastly superior - they have a toddler handrail.

I had a look today, it does make a lot of difference when you give those old stairwells a lick of paint and new stairs.

The benches on the platforms are also nice. I hope this is the beginning of the end of the massive inconvenience for passengers at HOP (especially on Platform 1) over the last 18 months or so?

After Network Rail cut down all the trees there was talk on this board that they might plant some wild flowers/species on the new embankment.

Does anyone know if did they plant anything other than grass? It looks like it is only single species grass coming up. After the loss of the woodland it would be sad to miss the opportunity to try to introduce some less common species into the site.

Is there anyone on the board would be interested in getting together to either to try to get network rail to do it – or just ask if we can do it ourselves.

The new big barbed fence they've put in is very ugly and impossing. If you get off the train now it feels like you getting off at a concentration camp or just another South East London urban s**t hole. Hardly the oases of calm and beauty it was before.

Imagine if they did the same to Sydenham Hill Station?

Bit harsh

They've got to keep the fare dodgers in/out somehow.

Seems a bit overkill for that as there is already one fence further up. I can't imagine fare dodging at the station is that bad.

Green space and the quality of the urban environment are important factors in things like crime levels ,stress and metal health, even mortality rates

Putting up ugly, imposing structures and removing a sense of connection to open green or natural spaces are common examples of degradation of the quality urban enviroment.

Still a bit harsh, at least they're green!!

The station as a whole is a darn sight better than it was before. The fact that you think "it feels like you're getting off as a concentration camp or just another South East London urban ***** hole", is a tad over the top (let alone the comments from your previous post regarding stress and metal [sic] health and mortality rates). "Hardly the oases of calm and beauty it was before" ??? Give us a break, you did see it before right?

Some people are never happy. Finally we get a decent station and platform and people still moan.

If it bothers you that much you should go down under the cover of darkness (if a polite request doesn't work) and plant a few climbing plants such as Clematis and Honeysuckle, I hear Clematis Montana is the fastest growing of all the clematis and also one of the easiest to grow.

“you did see it before right?”

Yes I did - I was perfectly happy. Even before I moved here I used to deliberately change at honor oak because it was the most pleasant on the line to sit for a while. The wooded area behind the station and the bird song by made you feel like you weren’t in an urban environment for a while, that you were connected to and surrounded by green space.

Sure the platform need improving but what they have done has degraded the station in important ways.

Not everyone likes large imposing barbed fences even if there are neatly painted seats next to them.

http://www.green-space.org.uk/downloads/...health.pdf

“The scientific work reported here provides clear evidence that among many sectors of society there are positive benefits for mental health and well-being to be gained from both active and passive involvement with natural areas in towns and cities. Regular access to restorative, natural environments can halt or slow processes that negatively affect mental and physical health. Walking in natural areas provides opportunities for social interaction that are particularly beneficial for the elderly. Exposure to natural scenes reduces stress. Trees play an important social role in easing tensions and improving psychological health. People feel better living around trees. Houses surrounded by nature help to raise children’s attention capabilities. Thus living in areas with trees helps to reduce anger and violence and improve the ability to concentrate and work effectively.”

A large wooded natural area that was clearly visible and felt very much part of the station has been removed and the grass bank that is replacing it will be barely visible though the slits a large imposing metal fence. I think it is a real shame and certainly not worth a new platform surface and couple of new benches. I don’t think that is an over the top view.

The level of the platform needs to be raised. It is quite a climb to get into an Overground train!

Agreed with henryb2 about the embankment.

We received a letter from Network Rail in October 2010 which said that the area would be planted with a "grass and wild-flower seed mix". As I think that the trees are a sad loss I followed this up with a call to their Community Relations. I was assured that, in addition to this planting, there were no plans to prevent a return of wild species including trees to the embankment.

If this really is, as it indeed appears to be, a single species of grass then there seems to have been a change of plan on both counts.

Am not so anti the fence though. It would strike me that the default alternative is the standard chain link variety - it is at least better than that.

All work on the up platform seems to have ground to halt. As I expected, the land behind the new railings is being used as a repository for litter, and though that is the responsibilty of thoughtless people chucking their cans and bottles through the railings, it would help if litter bins were provided.

Though it does look like platform lengthening work has begun, as there is some temporary fencing and an excavator to the North of both platforms today.

Regarding the lack of decent foliage, trees and general shrubbery on the bank behind platform 1, I wonder what would happen if everyone threw a few blackberries, acorns, conkers, logan berries, sycamore seeds etc etc etc etc etc over the fence whilst waiting for their train?
