im a self confessed tree hugger, and normally im the first to mourn any tree that gets chopped, but wild flowers are jsut as important a part of the environment, and if theyre going to sow wild flowers then thats great. a bunch of trees have been planted, and if they say the area wont be managed, then more trees will grow back.

so, it will all grow back, and in the meantime we'll have a wild meadow by the station. nature doesnt wait around... it'll be fine... its just shocking at first...

So you do not think step free access that important as long as people can get to another station?

The whole point is that people who need step free access usually have mobility problems, so going to Brockley or Forest Hill is not an otion.

It seems that thousands can be spent on maintenance at Honor Oak, including all the new machines that went in last year, but nobody really gives a toss about the disabled, thise with kids, etc.

It's an ongoing battle to get basic access for disabled passengers on our railways, especially at HOP.

It's not like a passenger can get a direct bus either from FH or Brockley to Honor Oak Park as an excuse.

Completely agree, john-f! A lot of the improvements and upgrades at HOP station seem short sighted and half baked. Accessibility should not be a nice-to-have extra if they want us to consider public transport as a serious alternative to e.g. using the car.

And it's not just those with disabilities and parents with children. I don't know how many times I've lugged heavy suitcases up and down those (slippery) stairs on the way to/from the airport.

Does anyone know if Southwark intend to use the sloping part of the land adjoining the station as a further extension to the cemetery?

Looking at the planning permission which was granted to convert the former nursery site into a cemetery back in 2000 the newly landscaped slope looks to be well within the boundary of the land allocated to be a new cemetery.

Without wishing to start a debate about whether urban green space should be used for burials it would seem a shame if this welcome piece of regeneration ended up covered in gravestones.

We have it on the grapevine that the next area to be used for burial space is the old Southwark Nursery site (where the illegal dumping has just been cleared at a cost of 3.4 million). It's behind the large site gates where the diggers are at the moment. This area will apparently last approximately one year at the current rate of burial. They obviously consider they don't need to inform/consult over using this area. The council presumably will then be looking at the Recreation ground/playing fields again which is part of the land they maintain they acquired over a century ago for burial. We understand that the issue of burial in Southwark is coming up at a February council meeting. Does anyone know anything more?
The area which has been cleared of trees and levelled is Network Rail's and is to be grassed, hopefully interesting ones. Southwark Council have planted a sparse strip of 'woodland' running from the playing fields through to the road (the planting plan is up on some fences) This is to replace protected TPO trees lost during the years of illegal dumping and probably to screen off! the new cemetery area. Perhaps we need to start a new thread about the future of Honor Oak recreation ground. It's going to need a lot of community support to save it from being nibbled away for cemetery use.

Does anyone know when the upgrades are expected to be finished at HOP station? And if it's just new stairs that are being fitted?

I'd like to know how far the cemetery is planned to come down. It looks like they are levelling out very close to the station. Is that all going to be cemetery as well? Or is the limit of the extension where the tall green fence is now? Was the whole area including the part that the cemetery is expanding onto effectively woodland before?

From discussion further up thread is sounded like that the whole are up the green fence would be allowed to be a green space. Bit it is not so clear now - there must be a big tempation to build on a large (newly created) area of flat brownfield.

Does anyone know how I can get hold of the planning permission and the environmental report? What are the current plans for that the old nursery?

.pdf File  Planning report.pdf (Size: 1.46 MB / Downloads: 614)
.pdf File  Planning permission.pdf (Size: 426.02 KB / Downloads: 605)

Here is the planning report that was produced by Southwark in relation to the planning application back in 2000. This includes a site map.

I also attach the actual planning permission.

Surely any planning permission granted in 2000 would now have expired.

The conversion of the nursery site into cemetery began within within five years of planning permission being granted so I assume it is still valid. I don't know if there have been any subsequent planning applications in relation to the current works.

You can now see St Augustine's church tower from platform 2 at HOP. It is a lovely view, if you ignore the foreground. I hop(e) that the new planting will find a way to leave it visible, it is one of the nicest towers in the local area ... at least for the moment.

News from LOROL that Network Rail are planning to install lifts at Honor Oak Park next year 2012/13. I'll be seeking confirmation of this exciting news! Getting onto and off trains on Platform 1 looks like it will still be difficult for the less agile. Has anyone seen platforms anywhere on Network Rail where just part of the platform has been raised to make trains more accessible? This might be one possible solution for HOP.

Wow, if confirmed this would be great news! andrewr, have you any further information on this?

The Northern Line at London bridge has nice platform ramps to allow level access to the carriages. They seem to be modular bolt-on components with a ramp and then a level area next to where the doors are when the trains stop. However, since Honor Oak Park has various types of train that stop in different places, I am not sure whether this type of part-raised platform could work? The raised areas might not always correspond to the location of the carriage doors.

Not sure if this has been been covered elsewhere already, but I was surprised to see what appear to be grave markers (wooden crosses) dotted across the corner of the old Nursery land (by the far end of the platform) at Honor Oak Park?

Are they actually old graves that have been uncovered after clearing the woodland or something else (my understanding from reading the previous applications to extend the cemetary was that neither the Park nor Nursery had been previously used for burial plots)?

They are for the construction of the bank, markers that give the degrees of the slope to the construction crews.

Londondrz,
That's just boring. Thumbdown

Can't we think up more imaginative uses; like places to nail anybody who has not signed the petition to save the Rec?
