Massive Fire, the whole roof is gone now. There are so many fire trucks and they have been trying to save it for a while now but I can't believe how quickly it went once it had reached the roof. It is the left building.

Terrible - thick smoke is beginning to disappear but could be long while before people let back into their houses. Will be a shame if the lovely building is damaged beyond repair. Lots of speculation as to the cause Sad

I live high up, so had a perfect view... it was very scary how quick it went up... from what I can see the roof has collapsed so I doubt there will be much left to save....

Such a shame, it's a really nice school.... thank goodness it didn't spread to neighbouring houses though....

We are just behind it on the hill too, so saw the whole thing. Mad how quickly it went. We only went to look out the top the house window when we hear the helicopter hovering above the house.

That fire was massive, we could see the smoke from our windows...we have friends living on that road and luckily the houses nearby haven't been affected. So glad. we were so worried. What a shame about the school though.

I was up on One Tree Hill and saw the whole thing from the first wisp of smoke thinking it was just a huge bonfire. It seemed to start in the middle of the building followed by two bangs then it spread to the left and the right with huge flames shooting up to the sky. Thank God no one was hurt but a lot of children are going to be without a school next week!!

Fire damage at Stillness Junior School - UPDATE
28th August 2010

You may have heard or seen that there has been a fire at Stillness Junior School this afternoon. Unfortunately, the Annexe Building to the front left of the school has been severely damaged and cannot be used. However, at present, we are anticipating that school will start as planned on Monday, 6th September, although there will be adjustments to the classrooms.

We will update this website on a regular basis once we have some more information next week.

We live opposite the school and our 9 year old is a pupil. There is still a fore engine pumping gallons of water into the roof. The fire started at the back left of the left building and spread through the roof very quick. The wind didn't help. By the time the fire service had two or three hoses working at full pressure it was too late. The left hand building is now a shell. The roof has gone completely. The back of the school looks worst hit. The year 4 classrooms and kitchens must be completely destroyed. Let's hope they can rebuild the school without having to demolish the brickwork.

This is good news but does sound a little optimistic as no school should open until after the Fire Brigade's investigation is complete and safety of the entire site confirmed. There may still be the potential for falling debris, and who knows at this stage the annexe may require urgent demolition if not safe.
