My mother lives at the Perry Vale end of Dacres Rd. Parking has become impossible . Most of the guilty are people who commute via the station . All able bodied people should be able to walk in London to their nearest station. These people have zero consideration for anybody else. BR should only sell season tickets to people who live within 1 mile of station.

Eh? Please tell me that's a joke or a rant, rather than a serious suggestion...

Perhaps CPZ would be a better solution...

What we need is a free car park next to the station. We used to have one, but no more. Instead we have a CPZ in David's Road and Manor Mount, another planned for Clyde Vale, and no doubt Perry Vale and all the surrounding roads will soon need CPZs as well.
Rather than trying to change behaviour with draconian methods, it would be better to accept that some people drive to the station and give them free parking (or at least less than ?12 per day) at a designated car park.
Tomorrow I will be doing the usual thing when flying of dragging a suitcase a mile across Forest Hill to get on a train for the airport. I used to drive to the car park when it was free and it made the journey a little easier. But if it is raining I might try parking on Perry Vale, sounds like a good spot.

Michael: (a) you only live half a mile from the station ;-) and (b) how about a mini-cab?

a) It feels longer with a suitcase
b) Why would I pay when I can travel for free?

Preferred the Merton Parkas myself, did the Selfish Parkas ever have a top ten hit?

(there is both a musical and vehicle connection here).
Go to any cycling thread to see BD's views on motorists. Of course I turn into a monster when I am on four wheels, parking on double yellow's in Peckham Lane, running the pedestrian lights by the station and driving down Manor Mount the wrong way.

Yes Matt my suggestion re season tickets said in jest. However this is a very serious problem.
CPZ's do not help anyone except the council
I suggest banning parking for 1 hour a day , say 10am to 11am . The warden has to make one visit only and stops the all day parkers. Many areas have these in place but think they are less popular with the council as less potential revenue

I happen to think that CPZ's are fantastic. But then I am directly effected by them and they have proved a massive relief to those people who live in the St David's/Waldenshaw area. As I keep asking, what is wrong with the parking on the South side of the station???? Understandably you wouldnt park there if you were jetting off somewhere but for ALL of Forest Hill parking needs. The place is big enough.

I appreciate that you like CPZ s.
Surely the number of actual places has been reduced by 40% odd. Are you not having to pay when you were not before.I would think you could get all the plus's and less of the setbacks by simply
banning parking for 1 hour between 9 and 4.

Brian,
If you ban parking for an hour during the day, surely you need some sort of CPZ anyway? Otherwise are you expecting residents to have to move their cars for that hour?

No I am happy with ban for 1 hr a day. I am not a resident but a visitor. All the residents have their own garages. Problem is visitors and tradespeople

I would argue (for the sake of the debate) that as visitors to the road, you and the station users are equally entitled to park there.

I notice the CPZ has forced day parkers up onto Westwood Park, which is now nose to tail all the way up the Kent side of the hill each day. In their wisdom (and greed?) and following a "consultation" I suspect Westwood Park will be made a CPZ. CPZs would appear to shift the problem rather than solve it.

Yes I agree CPZ's just shift the problem
Not quite sure of the logic whereby visitors to residents in the area have no more right to park than people ussing the station. No one should live that far from Forest Hill Station ,who uses the station , who cannot walk if able bodied.
If you recall two Catford Stations , Crofton Pk , Honor Oak Pk , Sydenham , etc etc. No one should have to walk more than half a maile.

Brian, I think the Vale Lodge situation does not help the parking problem. You should approach the counci in respect of the restrictions for leaseholders there that means they park on the street. There may be something they can do, at least they will prevent this getting worse if the freeholder applies for planning again.

Brian,
Sorry ? wasn?t trying to be argumentative, and it must be irritating not to be able to find a space when you need one.
However, my logic is that there are rules by which we are allowed to park (or not park) and I don?t think anyone should be branded a ?selfish parker? if they are legally leaving their vehicles in permitted places? They should, of course, be respectful of their presence in a residential area. (By which I mean not noisy, rude, parked over driveways etc) but that is not the issue we are discussing here.
The residents are catered for with their off street parking. Are you suggesting that the side of the public highway should be reserved for their guests only?
And for the record, I walk the station every day!

How about a free car park for commuters? Why was this such a good idea for decades but is suddenly a bad idea?
If a free car park was provided then there would not be any conflict between people driving to the station and people living near the station.
The problem seems to be that councils wish to make owning and driving a car less attractive. If people living close to the station, or visiting people, can't park their car then this seems to be a success for the people wanting us to all abandon our cars. Don't blame the parkers blame the council.

My main gripe with selfish parkers are the single people who dump their cars outside my house and my neighbours for anything from a week to three weeks when there is loads of space further up the road. Most of us have young children and it is a lot easier for a single person to walk up the road than my wife to have to carry a baby and take a 5 year old from a space miles away.
I would like controlled parking that is just for one hour a day that discourages this. Lewisham currently only has the all day you pay CPZ, perhaps it is time to lobby the council for the alternative!

Can we look forward to some sort of 'Baby On Board'-type stickers to display outside your house to shame those selfish singles into parking elsewhere?

Borderpaul why don't you write an A4 polite notice for those "selfish parkers" and stick in on a fence, lamppost or any other place clearly visible from the parking slots you talk about. The response will be quite surprising. People are very taken by their own lives to notice their neighbours' families and needs in a place like London. But when one appeals to their civic sense (or lack of it) there can be some positive changes.

If you want to park outside your house I suggest you move to the sticks.

Bosco, London drivers are persecuted enough without you sending the majority of us to the sticks.
I agree with you that we need to keep the highway public but I don't think there is the right balance between the needs of locals and the roads being used as a car park for commuters and long-term parkers.
I can't imagine any CPZ pays for itself unless it is very large so I think the council should accept it is going to be loss making and go for the cheapest option to enforce which would be the one hour restriction and which would least affect the area

Oh dear, maybe the owners of the three or four white vans constantly parked on my road, sometimes just outside my house, who obviously live somewhere else in Forest Hill, should move to the sticks. Or maybe we should all sell our cars, buy bicycles and stop moaning. What a very democratic way to see life in the capital. Because it is free and public it does not mean we should stop considering people around us or indeed our neighbours.

Look - I would love to always be able to park my car outside my house - especially on a Saturday when we come back from the supermarket with a car load of shopping but the fact is, it's not always possible and we just have to get on with it. I don't disagree with anyone about the CPZ option - I actually think it is a solution to the commuter parking issue but I have to say that on our street the time of day it's most difficult to get a parking space is in the evening - long after any commuters have collected their cars and gone home.
I am not saying we stop considering people, far from it - although I do like Millesens' suggestion of everyone buying bikes. And how do you know the white van drivers live elsewhere in Forest Hill - have you asked them?
anyway - I knew I shouldn't have bothered posting on this site today - I'm feeling very grumpy so of course that's how my post came across. I'm generally very lovely, although roz will probably disagree ;-)

Bosco,I am sure you are lovely. My husband, some of my neighbours and I have actually seen a few of the owners of the white vans walking to their homes, steets away from here where they had one to two cars parked on their drives, their steets narrow and packed with cars anyway. Maybe there should be a restriction on the number of cars a household is allowed to park on public roads. I come from a country where there are two to three cars per household and it is a nightmare. Pollution levels are terrible, garages and private car parking spaces are dearer than gold and congestion is unbearable. People fight over car park spaces so I wouldn't dare of doing that here.
