Can anybody tell me what on earth was going on last night? At about 1am there was a helicopter hovering over HOP! I had just come out of work and I drove around to try and figure out what was going on. There were over 8 police cars blocking the road parallel to Ackroyd road, opposite the pub. Does anyone know what happened?

I don't know what happened, but I certainly heard it! Closest helicopter I think I've ever heard.

What I find is, you often hear these sounds of an 'incident' (dozens of police sirens is another one) and never ever find out what happened!

I heard it about 1.15am flying round in circles over the top end of Forest Hill Road. It woke me up and took ages to get back to sleep.

I took the dog for a look last night.
Got to Brockley Rise at about 1.30, road closures round Bovil and Whatman, CO19 present. Doing a garden search with the dogs.
CO19 left at speed along with another car, so not sure if they called off the search or found and moved in.
Either way the containment was very relaxed, and all seemed under control.

As annoying as the helicopter can be, I sleep better at night knowing our police have such resources, and no stupid rules prevent them from flying when required Smile

1am ish the chopper was up over Stansted, and Waldram, slowly working its way over towards Wastdale and further to Bovil, Whatman etc.

As for the reason, I never took the time to ask the police I spoke to what was going on lol

The helicopter is a good resource. Some criminals once took refuge in a pub. The police on the ground brought everybody out of the pub and the helicopter crew identfied the suspects!

My car was stolen a few years ago by someone on the Honor Oak Estate who was known to the police - a helicopter was involved in a police chase of my vehicle which ended when the engine (of my car not the helicopter) gave out. I always thought it was a bit of an overkill for a then 13 year old Ford Fiesta but I was always very impressed they made the effort!

I think it's more likely that their priority was catching the driver (and vehicle) before s/he hurt someone. Along with gathering video evidence of the crime if the case were to be[/quote] taken to court. Rather than returning the car to its owner.

The risk of the driver hurting someone would be exacerbated by the fact it was being chased I think. There was no suggestion that the driver was speeding before that.

That's true, but having recorded footage of the chase would make it easier for the prosecution to prove who was driving the car as they would have the driver on film exiting the vehicle's right hand side.

I also think you maybe under the misapprehension that the helicopter was dispatched exclusively to track down your car. It's more likely that one was in already in the area. And from the description you've provided us; it sounds as though they'd be more justified in their actions if they just set one of their dogs off in pursuit of your elderly car and its nefarious driver.

Good to see them up and about even in this poor weather. Thanks Met Thumbup
The dogs love watching it circle over head. Looked Rockbourne, Stansted area, maybe Waldram.

Just watched a young lad being taken away in a Police van outside Sainsburys. As well as the helicopter there were 5 police cars, 2 vans and 18 policemen! I have no idea what went on but the air did smell of smoke. A young Guy Fawkes perhaps...

Yes I heard them about an hour ago. Glad the search seems to be over for whatever it was as they seem to use Greystead Rd flats as some kind of focus and can become like an annoying fly you really want to swat - particularly as it sometimes happens at 2 or 3 in the morning! But on balance I'd rather suffer the odd inconvenience than not have them there.

Definatly with you there billham, nice to know they are on hand.

Zee that's big numbers of police, but then nice to know the chopper was up for a full size operation, not just something little.

Glad they got their man.

I was doing a bit of curtain twitching last night and heard two police discussing the bloke who had been caught was an armed robber. Had been woken up at 11ish and felt like an extra in a 'Nam movie, glad they got the guy.

Most likely connected to this incident:
http://www.newsshopper.co.uk/news/844618...t_assault/

" The incident happened on September 10 when a man was attacked in his vehicle at Valentine Court, Forest Hill.

At around 11pm he was robbed of his property and then dragged from his vehicle by a group of black men and assaulted. "
