Hiya, just wanted to share this wonderful article entitled

Quote:
The Fight Against the Theft of Sydenham Common and One Tree Hill.

Many open green spaces that we take for granted today still exist because in the past they were preserved from enclosure and development by both legal and illegal
resistance. The battles to save two such spaces in South London, Sydenham Common & One Tree Hill, saw legal shenanigans, rioting, intrigue and violent death...

all about the historic fights against enclosures and for common land in days gone by. I think you;ll like it!

Read it here

You can find out more about One Tree Hill and the so-named "Agitation" by going to the Friends of One Tree Hill's website at http://www.onetreehill.org.uk

There is a link to an account of the history of the Agitation.

The pamphlet has a great picture with the hill literally only having one tree on it. also i wonder when the church was built? Does anyone know the site of the golf club house?

Nisbets books mentions that St Augustines was built in 1872, whereas the gold course riots took place in 1905 - im a bit confused as to how the church fitted in to the golf course - or where the golf course exactly wouldve been. anyone know?

sorry not 1905, but 1897...my mistake...still, the church would already have been in place
