The majority of One Day Travelcards currently sold will be withdrawn entirely in January – TfL calls it a “simplification.” The only one day cards available, peak or off-peak, will be for zones 1-2, zones 1-4, and zones 1-6.

One Day Travelcard users, peak and off-peak, who do not need to travel into Zone 1 will be worst hit of all. The Zones 2, 2-3 and 2-6 One Day Travelcards will be withdrawn. A Zone 2-6 travelcard (£9.00/£5.10) will be replaced by a Zone 1-6 Travelcard (£14.80/£7.50)

All these changes are tucked coyly away in a(n updated) “note to editors” near the bottom of TfL’s press release.

Oyster will still work out cheaper for a single journey, compared to a paper peak/off peak One Day Travelcard.

However this will hit part-time workers who buy a paper travelcard out of convenience.

It'll hit occasional commuters too who use Oyster PAYG since the peak/off peak cap is set at the price of the peak/off peak travelcard.

Do we know whether the Oyster PAYG caps will change?

Yes the travelcard caps will go up too. Seriously disadvantaging anyone that makes multiple journeys avoiding zone 1.

With Boris axing the Zone 1-3 and 2-6 One Day Travelcard, why not just axe zone 3 completely?

Incidentally if you use Southern and then the Tube from LB/Vic/Waterloo/Charing Cross, it's a hike from £3.70 to £4.10 during the peak, which will put more pressure on the Overground/Jubilee at Canada Water.

What a complete Johnson.

They give us the Overground line and effectively put us in zone 4, costing us who travel from Sydenham/Forest Hill to zone 1 an extra £27.20 a month.

Possibly another £326.40 a year.

TFL and BJ are basically saying 'stay where you are, don't go into central London'.

That's more than the road tax on my car! Plus it could affect house prices.

What idiot buys a new one day travelcard every day for a year?
If you are worried about saving money buy a weekly, monthly, or annual ticket. None of these tickets are being withdrawn.

There are some occasional travellers who will be negatively impacted but let's remember that back in 2009 all our train travel was excluded from Oyster - which effectively pushed the cost of similar travel beyond the zone 1-4 price if you used the train.

I would prefer this change not to take place, but will anybody in Sydenham and Forest Hill be worse off than in 2009?

If an occasional traveller is using Oyster PAYG even now, they'll still save money compared to buying the paper One Day Travelcard as long as they're only going to one station and back to HOP/FH.

It's when the new Travelcards come into operation that you'll get stung more as the zone 1-4 cap will come into play from January during the peak if travelling within those zones and 1-6 if you're travelling outside the centre.

Boris said on BBC London 94.9 earlier this week that only 300 people per day purchased the 2-6 peak One Day Travelcard compared to the millions who use Oyster PAYG and the One Day Zone 1-2 and 1-4 Travelcards.

This has nothing to do with oyster. The travelcards always included rail travel. The costs are the same with the oyster cap or a one-day travelcard.

It should also be remembered that there were above inflation increases last year as well.

It does have a little to do with Oyster. The one day travelcard price is used as a cap for Oyster journeys. For people who use buses most often (and others) it is much more convenient to use an Oyster card than to buy a travelcard, the advantage is that your expendature may be less but never moer than the equivelent travelcard. However, if you needed to get a train you used to have to calculate which would be cheaper in the morning Oyster or travelcard, and then if your estimate is that you would save money by getting a travelcard, then you would need to find somebody to sell you one on your way to the bus stop.

Getting a paper travelcard from a newsagent or as TfL officially calls them 'Oyster Ticket Stops' can be a hassle. Since the introduction of the portable Oyster selling machines, they've been unable to print out paper tickets, so the paper tickets they do sell (only One Day Travelcards) they have to get the date stamp and ink out before selling it to you.

Most of these retailers would rather you had your trusty Oyster Card and slap a few quid on that instead of purchasing the paper tickets.

You will still be able to get weekly Travelcards for zone 2-6, so it could be cheaper to buy a weekly travelcard than two one-day travelacards:
