There is a precedent in this seat for remaining a councillor after being elected as MP: http://www.jimdowd.org.uk/ec8bbd16-f428-...1b3b5fbe8f

Indeed, but as far as I'm aware when Jim stood for election in 1992 there wasn't a local government election in London at the same time. He sat for two more years as a councillor as well as MP and then stood down. He didn't contest two different posts at the same time.
Its therefore not quite the same, Alex.

I don't understand why he would ( until very recently) have had a strong sense of conviction. Many Labour supporters on here have described it as a safe labour seat and it is 85th on the liberals I think. If he feels he has served the area as a councillor I do not understand why he can't aspire to be the MP while accepting it ( until perhaps very recently ) was not very likely. To lose the MP election and then to be out of office as a councillor for the next four years if that's what he wants to be seems strange to me.

Indeed.
It clearly takes a (white) man to be a mayor.

You can always vote for a (white) woman, as long as you don't mind voting BNP.

Did any of the men say anything interesting?

  2. Culnane - Tess Culnane - 7, Bushey House, Charlesfield, Mottingham, SE9 4PP - BNP

All academic now probably as most people will have voted.
Probably like a lot of people I'm glad its all nearly over but regardless of who gets in we'll all need to brace ourselves for the slash and burn thats due very soon. Depressing times.

Lewisham's website says the results for the local government elections aren't expected until tonight (Friday 7 May):

Mayoral results: anticipated some time after 8pm

Local councillors: some time after 11pm

I don't think anyone, whatever their political affiliation, is entirely happy with the outcome of this election.

As a result, I expect we shall see in due course, PR in some form and also other forms of voting e.g. on the internet.

My favourite quote of the day: BBC home editor Mark Easton says: "Democracy can sometimes find it impossible adequately to reflect the contradictions contained in the voice of the British people."

No real surprises at Lewisham then!

I don't really agree that in the long term this result is bad for the UK, quite the opposite. If it were not for the economy the current hung parliament situation would not be as serious as it is but we can't do much about that now except hope a suitable compromise can be reached. I do think it will have been of some benefit if the Lib Dems run with Labour and there is true electoral reform which will probably put the Tories into permanent opposition . For me there has never in any one election been so much evidence of Tory privilege. Do ordinary people really want their lives run by the likes of Osborne and Zac Goldsmith? What could these people ever bring to this country? They are so divorced from the lives of ordinary people. Gordon Brown may have his many many faults including being a media and marketing disaster but I cannot right now see anyone better qualified and experienced to get us out of this mess. I also do not see how severe and immediate cutbacks which impact more onerously on the lower paid as proposed by the Tories could ever make sense.

Given the degree of frustration at Labour and the catalogue of things going wrong, the electorate had an opportunity to crucify Labour but they chose not to. The ideal solution is therefore surely a Lib Lab coalition, with Gordon as PM for now, but with the agreement that he goes within a year or if and when we are on the road to recovery. A further election is probably on the cards before that in any case with a new Labour Party leader in place competing against Cameron. If PR is in place we will have more of a chance of getting the stable Government we need.

The other positive thing about this election was for me the electorates ability to look beyond the spin, particularly the hysteria on immigration, as evidenced by the maceration of the BNP candidates in areas like Barking and the failure of UKIP to advance their position.

Official results are not yet in for the council seats, they should be available shortly on http://www.lewisham.gov.uk/CouncilAndDem...Elections/

However, twitter updates and Brockley Central are reporting the following:

Perry Vale and Sydenham held by Labour.
Forest Hill has 2 Lib Dems and 1 Labour (a gain for Labour)
Crofton Park has 2 Labour and 1 Lib Dem (a gain for the Lib Dems)
Elsewhere in the borough it would appear that Labour will take seats from the Greens and Lib Dems.

The winners in Crofton Park are Addison and Morrison for Labour and Bowen for the Lib Dems.
The winners in Forest Hill are Feakes and Peake for the Lib Dems and Anne Affiku for Labour.

John Russell and Sylvia Scott have both lost their seats. Both were hard working councillors and will be a loss to the council.

Congratulations to all the winners and commiserations to the losers, but especially to the two ex-councillors.

Where did all the votes go?

Looking at several of the wards

Brockley - Papers Issued 6864. Votes Available 20592. Votes Cast 18860. Votes Spoiled 150. Votes Missing 1582.
Crofton Park - Papers Issued 6747. Votes Available 20241. Votes Cast 17901. Votes Spoiled 153. Votes Missing 2187.
Forest Hill - Papers Issued 6619. Votes Available 19857. Votes Cast 18987. Votes Spoiled 117. Votes Missing 753.
Sydenham - Papers Issued 6711. Votes Available 20133. Votes Cast 18194. Votes Spoiled 186. Votes Missing 1753.
Perry Vale - Papers Issued 6679. Votes Available 20037. Votes Cast 18318. Votes Spoiled 57. Votes Missing 1662

Is it really so confusing that almost 25% of those who voted failed to cast three votes for councillors?
