I emailed the libarary to ask them to update their website with details of opening times and new facilities. Here are the opening times if anyone needs them:

Monday, Wednesday and Friday 9-7,Tuesday and Thursday 9-8, Saturday 9-5 and Sunday 10-4.

Nice to see a library open on a Sunday Smile

Do they do anything like kids reading clubs on the weekend? Might be an idea.

Any news on the film club?

Just saw the following on the Lewisham Council website about events at Forest hill Library:

Tuesday 18 December
5.30pm-7.45pm: Launch of the Forest Hill Library film club. With a talk on Alfred Hitchcock

Also, there is a film screening on Sunday afternoon at 1.00 , but unhelpfully it dosen't say what the film is!

Lets hope the film club gets supported.

Bah! What a stupid time/day. Who's back from work at 5.30 on a weekday? Sad

Or is it just me that isn't? Sad

I agree the time isn't going to suit a lot of people. I guess the problem is fitting the event within the library opening hours ie until 8pm on Tuesday. It'll be interesting to see how many attend, and whether they have plans to make the time more convenient.

Maybe an afternoon slot on the weekend would be better? Might be nice, then, to go for an after-film beer to mull over the film Smile

If you follow blushingsnail's link, you will see a Sunday afternoon matinee film showing for adults scheduled for 1pm this weekend.

Your wish fulfilled!!

With the library's re-opening I was looking forward to news of a film club, but unfortunately wouldn't be able to get back for that time after work during the week. I think that will be quite common. Will have to see how things unfold and maybe give them some feedback re timings. Sunday afternoon movie sounds lovely though.

Maybe we could get them to post what film it is on here every week.

Went today for the kiddies party- the place looks fantastic , internally and externally, and is well equipped with pc terminals , and of course, books. The kids section is very well catered for. Look forward to taking my child there and also spending a few hours browsing myself.
Any chance this thread could become a general library thread?

When using the accessible entrance I noticed a childrens play area at the rear of Louise House, part of the early years centre. Does anyone know anything about this ie is it possible to use it even though Louise House is closed?

With the newly extended school across the road, and with the improved library, this part of Forest Hill does begin to look handsome. The Council - for a change- should be congratulated for doing this so well. Its almost changing my mind about keeping the old pool building and doing a refurb. If this plus Louise House were refurbished to a high standard this would make a fantastic difference to the appearance and of course cultural provision of this area.

The library is very nice but it's a shame it hasn't got nearly as many books as it used to have. The ubiquitous modern minimalist style is all very well but I personally preferred wall to wall books and no big empty spaces.

Got to agree with you bigjulie, I was a bit disappointed at the lack of books too. It is a lovely building though. I just fear I'll have made my way through their stock come the end of 2008.

Nice to see mostly positive feedback on here! I am Thomas, Library Manager at FH Library and I am also beginning to establish the film club. The problem is, as many of you have noted, that the latest we close is at 8pm, so to fit in a film and a decent discussion it would have to start at about 5.30/6pm. The launch on Tuesday was very well attended and there is a lot of interest in a regular group. What I propose to do in the new year is have the next session (which I will keep you guys informed of) and discuss viable times with the group. Problem with Sunday would be that it has to take place in the ground floor meeting room which blocks off that room for most of the day and it has a lot of stock, etc in it that would be out of action.

The films this weekend, for your information, are:

Saturday 22nd:
11am-1pm: Citizen Kane (U)
2.15-4.15: High School Musical 2 (U)

Sunday 23rd:
11am-1pm: South Pacific (U)
1.45-3.45: The Incredibles (U)

Monday 24th:
10am-12noon: Shrek The Third (U)

My daughter went along today with my parents. Apparently the selection of childrens books is very good (thank you), but I believe that the choice for classical music is extremely limited ("Do you have any Classical music?", "Yes, we have 2 CDs, but they both seem to be out").

Not sure how many out there share an interest in Classical music, or how much music is taken out in any case, but thought I'd pass on the feedback.

I need to check it out (!) myself soon. Good news that we have a nice new library in Forest Hill (I bet Provender are happy too)

I went in on Sunday with my 2 year old. As a working parent it has doubled my chances of going to the library with my kids so I am grateful.

I was really impressed by the big screen and sound quality of the film on situated in the the Children's section. They will need the volume up loud so people can hear above the noise of children playing and parents reading to their children.
