There is a new crossing on Stanstead Road but there doesn't seem to be any indication to pedestrians when to cross the road.

Seems to be like the crossing of Honor Oak Rd close to Horniman's which I complained about before

Do you mean the one by the fire station? If so, this is a Puffin crossing instead of a Pelican crossing that you are used to. What's the difference?

The Pelican Crossing
The Pelican Crossing, using pedestrian-operated push button control, was designed for higher flows of pedestrians and/or vehicles. There are signals for drivers and pedestrians, instructing each when to stop and go. Pedestrians at Pelican crossings only have priority to cross whilst their signal is on steady green but do have ?right of precedence? to complete their crossing during the flashing green (flashing amber to vehicles) stage.

The Puffin Crossing
The Puffin Crossing (Pedestrian User Friendly Intelligent Crossing) is a development of the Pelican crossing and is planned to replace the Pelican type as the standard stand-alone pedestrian crossing. It has automatic detection of pedestrians to extend or reduce the all-red period as required to suit the crossing speed of the pedestrian. As well as on-crossing detectors, kerbside detectors can cancel a pedestrian demand if the pedestrian walks away from the crossing point, perhaps having crossed the road in a gap in traffic

Other crossing types include Toucan and Pegasus, but lets not muddy the waters Wink

According to TfL research, Puffin crossings have two key advantages over Pelicans: the sense of there being more time to cross the road before the lights change; and the smaller perceived threat of harassment from cars when pedestrians are still crossing. Overall, Puffins are therefore slightly more likely to engender a sense of safety among pedestrians. It does take some time getting used to the placement of the red/green man.

The cross/dont cross indicators are on the posts on the pavement near the button. Not on the opposite signal post like traditional pedestrian crossings.

If it does not have a wait button, or cross signs, its NOT a crossing.

That is another difference between Puffin (this style) and Pelican (Old style, pedestrian lights on other side, flashing amber/green man)

It's near the Fire Station...I looked across the road and couldn't see any sign to indicate when to cross.

There was a display at right angles which at first I thought was a button for horse riders.

It wasn't until I started crossing the road I noticed the 'action' man on my side of the road, it wasn't only me who crossed in fear of the unknown.

Not sure if it's safe to have to watch something that's at right angles to the direction your heading and at some point over your shoulder.
