Rob, the stained glass you mention is very similar in style to this example, isn't it?

I might try and get a pic of it on the way to work to compare... Smile

There's some reference on the internet to a book called History of Kings and Princes Garth and Forest Hill (Meles Meles Marks 1997) by Jad Adams, who lives in King's Garth. Obviously the library is closed but whether they would have it via the mobile library... (This thread has made me want to read through the two local history books I got as housewarming presents many months ago!)

I have this book somewhere- borrowed this years ago from Mr Adams himself - had good intentions of returning it but don;t know if hes still living there - I'll see if I can find it and PM you. No point in hoarding something that could be useful to others.

Got my anorak back on, so here goes. In answer to Nevermodern, Six Pillars is slap-bang next door to the Dulwich Wood House but on Crescent Wood Rd, not on Sydenham Hill. It's fantastic inside as I was lucky enough to get in during the one time the previous owners opened up for Open House. They were utterly amazed at the queue which by early afterenoon meant a two-and-a-half hour wait. It has a full width terrace on the first-floor at the rear and a roof terrace, the brick drum seen from the outside is an elegant spiral staircase. I believe it to have been designed by Val Harding who worked in Lubetkin's Tecton office and sadly he was killed in action in WW2. Fantastic house although if I had 1,3 million to spare, I'm not sure if I would want the noise from the pub garden! "Regina" is the pure white house on the triangle at the top of Horniman Drive, not the Arts and Crafts style houe next to Baxter Court, the '80's flats next to the radio mast. Hope that is useful.

Is there a "nevermodern" style? or a "post-nevermodern" style?
I think there should be.

Interesting thread.

And an interesting piece on deco cinemas:

I've been inside Six Pillars as some friends were looking after it recently for the estate agents. It's like a maze of small rooms leading on one from the other. I found it slightly claustrophobic inside which is what I suspect has put off some buyers. But it is certainly one of a kind and the views from the balcony are lovely. I wouldn't say no!

Don't know if it's been mentioned yet but the Capitol is a good example of that Egyptian inspired Art Deco.

Oops sorry Nevermodern. Just noticed you've already mentioned the Capitol.

Thought this was a better thread to post the links to...

The 'history' section on both these SE23 buildings is really good:

Not sure Walters Way entirely counts in that category but interesting how many homes in or near SE23 there are on this site at the moment. There is another near Crofton Park.

Becoming more fashionable already?

More Six Pillars info: http://www.themodernhouse.net/docs/prope...llars.pdf.
I thought it was usually credited to Tecton (& Valentine Harding?) rather than to Lubetkin specifically?

Does this work?

Odd that. When I paste the link in it works but it fails to display fully in the post...
Full link is:
http://www.themodernhouse.net
/docs/properties/sixpillars.pdf
Try cutting and pasting it.
Its a PDF of the sales info on the house with good photos and is well worth a read. It also has very good reproductions of the original floor plans.
There was a really nice little book on Lubetkin and Tecton published by The Arts Council in 1981 which is worth tracking down if you like their work.
