I've always thought that crossing is bad for pedestrians. It isn't entirely obvious that each side of the pedestrian island has its own light sequence and I could quite understand someone stepping out thinking they had priority because they'd just seen a green man for the other part of the crossing.

Obviously you get used to it if you live here but for young kids and visitors (esp. with the Horniman right there) it could be a recipe for disaster.
