Why oh why is Christchurch School still closed.
Cannot believe most if not all teachers could not get there by bus.

The good lady wife trekked through the ice and snow this morning to take the kids to nursery. It was shut.

She is not a happy bunny.

I can understand her agravation.
I appreciate yesterday little option but to close but do they really need to close today.

The snow is bringing all the wildlife out looking for food - we had a parakeet on one of our birdfeeders yesterday! Amazing sight.
And a fox in the middle of our snowy garden in broad daylight.

Cheered me up, as am pretty housebound here with two small, ill, children ...

Just travelled to and from Beckenham by bus. Was amazed at the number of school age children not at school.
Surely there cannot be any local schools still closed

Solution.
For those that have been closed stay closed all week then cancel half term, should suit everyone. Perhaps Mr Ball's should act

There's a warning of a major further snowfall next Monday. Of course, might never happen, because weather forecasting does seem to be a bit of a dark art. But you heard it first here....

Had to walk in the middle of the road this morning to get to the station. It was leathal. Hope its better when I go home

Why on earth aren't the council gritting the pavements?
Just a few footholds would help.

There is indeed a national shortage. However, sadly when the crews were going out, they were choosing NOT to use the little pavement gritting machine, and instead just dumping a shovel full off grit here and there..... great help!

If each of us had sensibly cleared the pavement in front of our properties, there would have been footholds aplenty.

Now I may be wrong about this so shoot me down in flames if you like but I believe that if someone slips on ice formed after you have cleared your pavement it leaves you liable
don't ask me how I know this or where it came from but it something I have understood for a very long time

I 100% agree and in former years I would have done so.

However in these litigious times I am given to understand that if you clear outside your home but someone still falls they can sure you. If you do nothing and they fall they cannot sue you.
Is this an urban myth or correct.

I think this is true. It is called misfeasance. It is like negligence except you have actively taken action, but made the situation worse.

Removing a top layer of snow might expose patches of ice underneath.
And gritting this ice will not melt it straight away.
And grit can be slippery in itself.

And even if you have done this all perfectly, can you prove it, if someone slips - perhaps on ice already on their shoes?

So it is safer to leave it. And yet we would be better off if everyone had a go.

Perhaps the answer is to clear the ice/snow anonymously in front of someone else's house! The net benefit is the same - just don't get caught.
